Root Need Some Rom/Rooting Help

Alright, I have been doing research for the past week or so on rooting and I feel like I have a solid grounding. I have never rooted my htc evo 4g, but I want to! Quick notes:

I am aiming to use VaelPak 3.2 RC1 as my new rom

I have also been trying to find a step by step instruction on how to not only root the phone, but also flash the rom. Are there any available? Also, do I need to also flash a kernel along with this rom?

I just rooted my daughters Evo with Unrevoked 3 and its really pretty painless. Just install it on your computer, run it, plug your phone in and it does it all by itself. As far as the ROMs go, I would make sure that your not loosing anything like 4g, wifi, etc.
 
thanks guys, I decided to go for it but after running unrevoked 3, i got the message: error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
 
thank you guys! I am rooted! just one more question for the future, if I wanted to replace the current custom rom i have on my evo, do i have to delete it off my sd card and replace it with the other one, or just throw the NEW rom on my sd card and flash it? thanks!
 
yeah just download the rom and move it to the root of your card. and flash away. it will replace your current rom. however, before you flash anything make sure you do a nandroid backup.

here are the basic steps:
1)make a nandroid
2)wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache
3)flash rom

it is as simple as that
