Root Need to root my phone. . .

Tinah

Lurker
Because I am sick and tired of all the stupid add on programs updating every time i have to reboot my phone because it has locked up several times a day. All the directions i can find are not an easy to follow sequence, but instead go on about typing in command lines and stuff and I don understand what program I am supposed to open to do any of it.
I'm confused, and frustrated, and don't know where else to turn for help. At this point i just want my old flip phone back. At least it could be turned on without 10 minutes of closing out updating programs and then removing updates because it was out of room 5 times a day.

Head over to the All Things Root section. The OV is pretty easy to root and there are some really great ROMS for it. I always used MIRaGE or Harmonia if I needed to go back to Froyo. The OV is one of my favorite phones I've had. I still have it as a backup to my Evo V.

I can't find a sub forum titled "all things root", Just listings of various devices and maybe 5 or 6 general forums. when i googled, the first place it sent me on here started talking about programs that are not on my phone. What is a ROM? I just want to be able to have the little grey button that says "uninstall" work on the factory installed programs. Am I asking for the impossible?

What kind of phone is it? You posted on the Optimus V forum. If that is it, there is an all things root forum with detailed instructions. If not you need to find the forum for your phone model as different phones have different instructions on rooting.

Yes, i have an lg optimus v. I found the root guide, However, the first thing is says is that I need to figure out what version of the os I am running. Okay, fine, but instead of saying, for instance, that I need to go to "applications, settings, os version, and read off what is there", the thread linked starts going into a bunch of readings that other people got without ever telling me how to get there. Is there a simplified guide somewhere i am missing?

Hey Tinah, I'm going to have a Moderator move this thread into the actual All Things Root sub-forum.

The easiest way to figure out what baseband your phone has (baseband is the most important for determining what ROM's and recovery's you can install/flash) is to go to the menu/settings/about phone. You will see "Baseband Version" listed with your phones baseband.

Mine is an early 2011 model with a ZV4 baseband and came with an unlocked bootloader, a Novatek screen, and WiFi hotspot cabapility built in. The ZV4 baseband allows me to flash/install any recovery or ROM developed for our V (and even some developed for the Optimus S). It also allows me to use any root exploit that has ever worked on the V.

The early ZV5 baseband V's (August 2011 to about October 2011) still had the Novatek screen, but, had an inaccessable bootloader and no WiFi hot spot capability built in. Because it still had the Novatek screen it could also flash/install any recovery and ROM developed for our V.

The later ZV5 baseband V's had the Hitachi screen and drivers installed. This caused a black/blank screen condition when custom ROMs and recovery's that had been developed prior to it where flashed/installed (still will). They have since solved this problem in later recovery and ROM development.

The ZV5's need to use the Gingerbreak.apk or the Gordita Root exploit to achieve root access (the Gingerbreak.apk being the safest to use, albeit, it is the slowest some times).

The ZV9 baseband V's have everything the ZV5's do/don't, plus they have a newer radio (not the same as AM/FM) and security measure's that make it extremely hard to gain root access. They need the Gordita root exploit.

In the All Things Root Guide sticky (sticky'd threads are at the top of the forums) I have tried to annotate which ROM's will give a "Black Screen of Death" by showing which Android version they will work with (also in "about phone" section).
My V is a ZV4 baseband with Android 2.2.1.

All ZV5 and later V's had Android 2.2.2. If you have a ZV5 baseband V with the Novatek screen the Recovery's and ROM's that will work with Android 2.2.1 will work on it as well. It was just easier and safer to display the info the way that I did to keep those that had a ZV5 V, but didn't know for sure what screen they had, from messing up their phones.

I also posted a Guide (really just a thread that happened to have the necessary info in it) that explains how to determine which screen a ZV5 has. The phone has to be rooted and have Busybox installed first (Busybox is a set of binaries that are necessary to complete a lot of rooted tasks).

Note: All custom ROM's already have root access (via the su file in /system/bin) and Busybox installed (usually in /system/xbin).

If you need any help with rooting just ask. The first Guide in the All Things Root Guide sticky would be the first one to look at if you have a ZV4 or ZV5 V.
If you have a ZV9 V then just continue to ask for help in this thread (a guide really hasn't been made up for it just yet).

Hope this isn't too much info to digest (I like to give complete answers to questions)

PS: The BobZohme modified ClockworkMod recovery (VM670NH_recovery.img) and the MiRaGe ROM (Gingerbread ROM) are by far the best for our phone and will turn your phone into what LG and Virgin Mobile couldn't (the best 3.2 touchscreen Android phone on the planet).
Here is a guide for after you have rooted your phone: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...all-flash_image-flash-recovery-rom-theme.html

I had my OpV and enjoyed it very much. It was ZV4 and I tried more than 30 custom ROMs and had lots of fun. Unfortunately, one day I decided to activate the phone, and mistakenly up it to ZV9. And now it is not root and just a plain phone. I need some help to get it rooted and have fun again with custom ROMs. Where do I found more info for "Gordita root exploit". One simple mistake... very upset. I would like it to be back to ZV4 if possible. If not, I just root it and put up with ZV9. No. The phone currently is not rooted and has no recovery or Clockworkmod. It is a plain dumb smart phone.

TIA,

bun

Done. Succeeded. Have CWM 4.0.1.5 installed and is now running IHO on ZV9, Thanks,

bun

Glad you got it all fixed up!:)

Sounds like you've become quite the flashoholic, just wandering if you tried the new modded rom by AndyOpie150 and the Kraven : [ROM][MOD][THEME] Bean_Whiz-CM10 Updated 10/14/2013 - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

I think you will like this, it's jellybean with a Touchwiz 5.0 launcher and themed to look like the Galaxy S4. I would use this as my daily driver, but you need a bigger sdcard and i don't have a computer to transfer files and data :(
