Network vision & LTE rollout

Still haven't seen any real confirmation of 4G service in Wichita, other than one person, however my 3G speeds took a dramatic jump over the weekend. Prior to the 15th, I was averaging about 150k for downloads. Then my speed jumped up to about 500k. Then it dropped back to 150k. As of today though, I am averaging between 1000k and 1500k for download speeds on 3G. My ping times have also dropped way down to about 100ms. My upload speed is around 500k.

All in all, it looks like Wichita is finally seeing some benefits. not sure how widespread it is yet. I didn't think to check my speeds at home this morning on the northwest side of Wichita, just on the east side near Kellogg and Rock.

]Lol....getting LTE in a 4ft by 4ft spot in McKinney...if I walk any direction from that spot I lose it

They are definitely working on something ...McKinney is not even listed on the coverage map....or the internal map I see

how the hell did you find that 4ft square in Mckinney?

It is right behind my store ...I was out back smoking on break..texting an xda friend on gtalk and looked up at the status bar and was like...WHOA...no...WHAT...nah...OH REEEALLY...

I started pacing back and forth and lost it..it came back..lost it..it came back

It was awesome because there is NO COVERAGE listed in Mckinney. 3g speeds got a boost too.

We were so much in disbelief that we took multiple LTE phones out to the spot and checked, sure enough each one connected in that spot haha.

We don't expect it to be official but it is nice to know they are actually working on it

That might be good news in regards to what you're seeing in McKinney. I saw this post on S4GRU that may be of interest to you (post #45): Sprint LTE Coverage Map - Dallas/Ft.Worth Market - Sprint 4G Rollout Updates - Page 3

Based on what you're seeing in McKinney recently and what S4GRU is posting as far as schedules go, there is a definite correlation... Looks like Sprint is staying on schedule.. or at least close to it.

I love his site. Curious at times where his info comes from because it's usually pretty darn accurate.

If you have not caught it I actually work for Sprint. Internally I can see "most" of what is going on. Currently I "could" tell you exactly where active and planned towers are....unfortunately I can't :(

Wichita is indeed part of Sprints Kansas City market. Although, I'd imagine they are concentrating on KC at this time. However, there are reports of Sprint LTE in Wichita already.
Here is one I found with a quick glance: Report Your LTE Connection Here UPDATED 6/15/2012 - Sprint 4G Rollout Updates - Page 11 (I follow S4GRU pretty close, Rickie is legit, so I'd trust this post.)

Alright , so I've been curious and for some reason I can't find a 4g WiMAX map of sprints coverage so this thread is for you members of the 3vo users to say where your using your phone and whether or not you are within reach of 4g.

I have since upgraded my Evo 3D to an Evo 4G LTE but I used to get WiMax about 50% of the time in Fenton, Missouri.

(Please do not post links to maps of coverage areas for sprint)

Well if you decide you want to see a WiMax only coverage map...look below

Just switched to Sprint after venturing around in Pre-Paid land and Verizon. Couldn't be more disappointed.

A friendly rep in Atlanta sold me an HTC Evo 4G LTE... the phone is great, but wow LTE reception is nearly non-existant. Why would Sprint put out a press-release about the launch of the 4G/LTE network when, as far as I can tell, I can only get a bar of 4G at the Sprint store, and in a couple spots on I-20?

The speeds were not impressive either. About 7 mbps down, when my wife's S3 with Verizon was pulling 40. And it goes without saying that 3G speeds seem abysmal so far.

Sprints earnings were released this morning and they were pretty dreadfully bad. I think I'm just going to jump off the Titanic while there's still time. I really want to like Sprint because the fact that they're taking the unlimited data angle I think is very cool. But I got about the worst first impression of the service that I could.

Shame on the salesperson if they did not properly set expectations. As mentioned several times in this thread the launch was a soft launch. They could have been more clear of details but they did not lie. LTE LTE launched in those cities. Not all towers launched in those markets for various reasons. They flip on more every day just as ATT does and Verizon. The difference is that those companies started sooner. Att still has quite a few areas that have no LTE and when they did turn it on it was no different. It was less than a year and a half ago that we purchased the first LTE phone on ATT and launch was identical....actually even more exaggerated with publicity.

My view is biased yes....but I think we got in at the right time and I see it getting better with every tower switched on. I really can't comment on reports of insane speed tests on Verizon. I can achieve 50s and 60s down on ATT but only in specific areas near towers. I can also quote my good friend in Dallas who is an Area engineer for Verizon in saying there is no way to expect those speeds in every location covered. He tends to average 12-19 down. My average on att is about 8 and on sprint has been anywhere between 8 and 25

Yeah, since I posted that, I have seen several other confirmations of LTE here in Wichita, and my 3G has stayed up over 1000k downloads. Have also found better coverage, although still only have one or 2 bars max at my house. If I go two houses down the street in either direction, I end up with full bars. Oh well, maybe that will improve too.

So I just listened to the Sprint call. The Network Vision guy said the LTE network is performing well. Just wow, lol. He also confirmed that the FCC approved LTE deployment in the 800mhz band.

performing well.... what does that entail? what is "well"?

True that! Good news is, there are multiple reports of Sprint LTE expantion every day. Seems like New LTE towers are poping up on the daily.

Speaking of...more towers went live Thursday and Friday! Signal drops less than a mile from my house :(

May be a sign that I will get LTE in bfe after all though!

Where its active it is impressive...it just isn't active on a broad level yet.

i see... where it is active.

hhmm....
i m still waiting for active towers in Dallas / Ft Worth area.. where I AM.

tested 3G.. it is even slower today. 150kb!!!

In listening to him speak, he wasn't very specific with why he felt it was going well. He seemed to overlook all the customer complaints, but hey it was an investor meeting.

That was during my trek of east McKinney and Allen

Last night and today I am picking it up outside in my driveway. Yesterday I couldn't.

From what I can tell by looking at the the interactive maps in the Sponsors section at S4GRU, of the towers that have been upgraded in Dallas, most only have 4GLTE live so far, not 3G, yet.

Officially and internally I haven't seen anything confirming 3g upgrades

I have caught momentary bursts of much better 3g though

Months ago.. When sprint was telling the public about their great plan for the future.. All data speeds would be better... Tower upgrades will boost every network on sprint

I can't speak for other markets, but as I have said before, here in wichita, KS I went from 150k average downloads to between 1000 and 1500k on 3g. Even in areas that still don't have great signal, I am getting 500k. I would say chances are good that Sprint isn't blowing smoke when they say 3g and 4g will benefit. My 3g service is actually usable now, which it wasn't really before the upgrades.
