Network vision & LTE rollout

Totally speculation at this point in time. Sprint may raise prices or even eliminate unlimited alltogether in the future, but that future is far away from what I can tell.

Case in point, network vision will be completed in 2013-14, at that point in time Sprint may re-evaluate the need to keep unlimited or increase prices. But i don't think so. At that point in time the whole system has been upgraded, but that does not mean everyone has gone on board and joined Sprint. I see another 6-12 months after that when you see folks joining sprint in droves since the network is completed and has shown folks that it can be among the top 2 in terms of speed, reliability and service.
With more customers coming to Sprint, they will have the cash to expand further. I assume they will buy out the smaller companies like MetroPCS, US Cellular to form one bigger company to compete with the big two.

At that point, i see them possibly eliminating Unlimited or raises prices or both.

Hoping someone can clarify this for me. Something I noticed with lte vs.wimax, while chilling with my cousin that just got the photon q.

Does lte eliminate the need to toggle 4g? On his mophoq, there was no radial toggle in the settings, so I wasn't sure if lte is set to just switch on when it's in range and no way to turn it off...or were we over looking where the toggle setting is located?

Perhaps so, but, being as guesstimates have them upgrading my area near the end of the NV upgrade process: Were I to move to a Sprint data plan today, that means I'd actually see the speed increase about the time my contract would be up for renewal and the prices might increase. (Mind you: Surveying other Sprint users in my area: Data performance is currently lousy-to-non-existent.)

It's looking strongly like we're probably going to stick with voice-only lines, for now. We've been debating smartphones, but, were we to make that move, we'd probably move to T-Mobile. We feel the top three wireless carriers' data plan prices are more than we can justify, for our modest wireless needs.

In fact: Were it not for the fact there's an ETF on my wife's phone, we might've moved over the TMO, just for voice, w/in the last week or so. Sprint's voice network has been becoming increasingly wonky for me, of late, and I long ago tired of calling them up and complaining about it.

They would basically turn themselves inside out if they raised prices right now. Higher price on a lesser quality network? I don't think so! Lol

Yes, you don't need to toggle 4g LTE
 
I figure I'll add my own speedtest screenshot. I just found a spot in the Baltimore area with it. Unfortunately, I only had time to do one test. It averaged about 12 Mbps until the end where it spiked up to 17 Mbps.

Seems to be the average, though. I just wish I could have done a few back to back.
 
Not sure what effect on battery, but on HTC LTE 4g, yes you can deselect LTE.
Settings>Mobile Network>Network mode> pick LT/CDMA or CDMA only.

Yes, the option is there.

There were a bunch of people who did comparisons on battery with 4g on and off and the consensus was it wasn't enough of a savings to turn it off.

Most even got better 3g speeds with the LTE option on

Thank you both! I didn't realize that. Now, at least, I'm more informed when I finally make my upgrade decision...LOL...I was all ready for my 4G toggle not to work correctly with Widgetsoid, but I guess I won't have to worry...hahahaha.

Yea, its definitely nice not having to worry about toggling 4G like we used to have to do. I leave my new EVO in CDMA/LTE Mode 24/7 and my battery still lasts 20 to 30 hrs a charge.

Thanks, Ben. Yeah, I didn't realize that had changed. Just to prepare, I think I'm going to edit my widgetsoid toggles now, so 4g doesn't show.
 
I live in Houston and so am lucky enough to have access to LTE sometimes. But it is so frustrating that I only seem to get it in certain areas, and the rest of the time I'm still stuck with Sprint's atrocious 3G speeds.

How is it that the 3G coverage blankets the entire city, and yet the LTE coverage seems to be in pockets around the city (and not even in some areas that I would consider "major," such as I-45)? WiMAX was the same way.

I could understand if the explanation is simply that Sprint is not done rolling out LTE even in the markets that have it, like Houston. But I get the feeling that the cities that already have it, however spotty, are already "done," at least for a long time, while Sprint works on putting it in other cities.

Does anyone else experience this in other cities? Or do you get LTE everywhere? How is it with other carriers in the cities where they have LTE?

Users in Kansas City, how happy are you with Sprint's LTE coverage and speeds. Has the network been reliable? Also is there a coverage map of LTE areas in KC? I know Wi-MAX is in and around, but I am wanting general feedback on LTE.

Sprint launching LTE in 5 new cities (In Kansas, Illinois, and Mass, bah!) but apparently 3G speeds are going to be improving?

Anyways, if any of you have really shit speeds, I'd say call Sprint and tell them your can't send text messages. They'll have you turn off the phone, they'll do something, then tell you to turn it back on, and afterwards your 3G may improve. Mine improved dramatically.

Because when they "launch" a market not all of the towers have been upgraded, yet. So, yes, the same is going on in other cities as well. In all of the launched market's, less than half of towers have been upgraded, so far. And no, they are not even close to being done in Houston, or any market. So, even after LTE is launched in any given market, coverage will continue to spread and become more dense until all of the towers in that market have received upgrades. Nearly all of Sprints 38,000+ towers will be overhauled, so anywhere you get 3G, you will get 4G LTE, eventually. Darn it!!! It looks like I picked a loser again. Sprint is screwing up Network Vision big time. They launch without adequate LTE coverage and the 3G speeds become unacceptable in the markets where they are working on "Network Vision." This is worse than the Wimax debacle. At least 3G worked when they screwed up the Wimax roll out. Now I'm left with the worst 3G speeds in the industry and no LTE for my LTE phone. I should have gone with AT&T or Verizon. Yes they are expensive but at least their 3G and LTE networks are up and running in my area.
