Network vision & LTE rollout

I was driving through Buffalo Grove, IL and WOWOWOWOW

I'm picking up LTE in Elkhart Indiana! 6-8mb upload and download speeds. Not the best, but way better than the 3g I've had for the last year.

Can someone clarify. The areas being reported of receiving LTE signal aren't areas I'm familiar with? How "open" are they in comparison to major metropolitan cities?

I just find it odd that it always seems to be "random" cities that receive strong 4G signal from Sprint, but when we're talking the major metropolitan areas, the signal always seems to fail...LOL. My 3 relatives with the Photon Q have yet to see the signal switch to LTE anywhere in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Network Vision/LTE Deployment schedule update - Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Funny thing is, most of the areas in L.A. that are "live," but not officially launched, are areas that me and those family members frequent...still haven't seen a hint of signal. I'm familiar with the rollout, but just hoping that the "Network Vision" is going to be as good as Sprint anticipates because if it's just as spotty as WiMax, then it was a waste of money for Sprint to make the switch, especially for major metropolitan areas like L.A.

Keep in mind the WiMax is clearwire's network not Sprint's and yes that roll out was awful. Let's hope this will be much better I also live in the LA/OC metro area and will be looking forward to a better roll out. LTE is not live in LA on the Sprint network maybe turned on and off for testing nothing end users can find. I think we are looking at early to mid 2013 for any chance of seeing LTE fingers crossed

PS just noticed this was post 666

I just got confirmation from a Customer Service Representative at Sprint that Network Vision hasn't even been started in the San Francisco Bay Area market which includes Oakland and Berkeley. We were supposed to be a "first tier" market and completion was supposed to be the end of this year.

Instead we are suffering with the worst 3G speeds ever (today at work is ping: 1014ms, download: 7kbps, and upload: 6kbps). And there is no end at sight.

I'm thoroughly disgusted. I grew up in Chicago and I'm thrilled for the Sprint customers there that their network is finally being brought up to speed. But here in the very tech savvy Bay Area we've seen no love from Sprint.

So, the people of the Bay Area will continue to flee from Sprint. After 13+ years of being with Sprint, I'm looking into what it would take to get out of my contract without incurring that giant termination fee ($350) so I can go with a carrier who deigns to serve my area as it should be served.

Not true. Network Vision upgrades have begun in the SF Bay market and sites are added weekly. Source: S4GRU.com

Didn't Sprint own Clearwire?

Gee, I'm so stunned that a Customer Service Representative at Sprint is clueless about what is actually going on with their own network...

According to s4gru.com they should have 5% of the sites complete here? And they are going to launch in December? Most likely it'll be yet another launch with less than 30% of the sites online. What is Sprint thinking?

Yea, I would stick to S4GRU.com for Sprint's network upgrade info. Things seem to acellerate every week now.

They are thinking that if they get some towers activated, it will alleviate some of the issues users in that region suffer from. None of the companies active in LTE technology currently have launched markets any higher than 30%, so don't fool yourself in thinking that Sprint is making some kind of mistake. Would you rather wait forever for 100% change or get incremental changes? You can't have it both ways.

They owned a majority stake in the company, but roll out was still handled by the 3rd party (Clearwire).

I see. And then they sold their majority stake, right? I seriously can't remember timeframe and details of the Clearwire deal, but I appreciate the clarification.

FYI: Clearwire runs it's own network and only outsources some work. My office is right next to a clearwire office and I talk to techs all the time. Now Sprint on the other hand outsources all tower work.

Simcha, try calling Sprint, tell them you can't send or receive text messages, and have them do whatever they "do" to fix it on their end, and see if you speeds increase. Obviously, and you probably already know, but make sure your PRL, then Profile, are updated

I too was ignornant and unaware of the true progess of updating the network until I searched around. There are markets that are indeed getting upgraded at a fast rate and some may not realize it. Frisco, Chicago, LA etc, still until Sprint turns o he switch alot may not know how far they the progress has gone.
Case in point. NYC, for all intent and purposes has been quite slow according to the Sprint site and maps, but s4gru and its members has shown that the city and its surrounding areas are indeed getting the sites upgraded. Numerous other areas are too. The part that gets me is that alot of folks are unaware of what is actually going on in terms of network vision. And Sprint is not pushing out the word and or displaying the correct information on their website to let them know what is going on. It is sites like s4gru that are keeping folks aware of how far network vision is progressing, more than Sprint themselves.

people need to not rely on one source (as in Sprint) but others that are providing the necessary info so they can see what is actually going on.

I refuse to be ignorant and be keep in the dark, and I advise others to seek out the info and expand their knowledge of what is happening with Network Vision and see that it is progressing quite well.

Totally speculation at this point in time. Sprint may raise prices or even eliminate unlimited alltogether in the future, but that future is far away from what I can tell.

Case in point, network vision will be completed in 2013-14, at that point in time Sprint may re-evaluate the need to keep unlimited or increase prices. But i don't think so. At that point in time the whole system has been upgraded, but that does not mean everyone has gone on board and joined Sprint. I see another 6-12 months after that when you see folks joining sprint in droves since the network is completed and has shown folks that it can be among the top 2 in terms of speed, reliability and service.
With more customers coming to Sprint, they will have the cash to expand further. I assume they will buy out the smaller companies like MetroPCS, US Cellular to form one bigger company to compete with the big two.

At that point, i see them possibly eliminating Unlimited or raises prices or both.

With the marriage of Tmo and Metro I guess Sprint getting Metro now won't happen unless they can pull off some creative maneuvering to make it happen. From what I've read so far, TMo plans on keeping Metro separate for now and later on using Metro's LTE for their benefit.
