Network vision & LTE rollout

4G started showing up for short amounts on time this morning while I was in West Hollywood (Los Angeles area) making a shirt delivery. I tried to get a screen shot, but it would only pop up for seconds at a time (I was driving). Maybe they are testing it?

What most folks do not realize (and I blame Sprint for this) is that there are quite a handful of sites that go live each and every day, but Sprint does not make the public aware. The excellent folks over at s4gru update their data once a week (since its a lot to compile and present) but Sprint does not (even though the data is coming from Sprint.

In fact today South Carolina was reported going live and may be for a short while until the Sprint folks get to it to test. Once they test they turn off the switch until giving the go ahead to turn them back on (usually when over 50% of sites have been done. So as Ericsson, Alcatel/Lucent and Samsung continue their task, you will see more and more sites lit up.

Wish I had a LTE device already...LOL. Hoping that's this coming Thursday.

No need to blame Sprint if Sprint told you a site was live everytime it was live for testing then turned off. Sprint would have lots of pissed off users. And I think but I'm not sure but most of the testing info S4GRU gets is from users that happen to catch a live LTE tower. I do know that Robert at S4GRU the site admin also has some inside contacts at Sprint. I would rather Sprint work out the bugs and do a launch. Or even a soft launch.

Don't get me wrong, when I say I blame Sprint I mean they should be a bit more open to the public to let them know basically what is happening in their area. Their maps are not really accurate. many folks still blame Sprint for not going full steam ahead with wimax and alot of areas were never covered. These same folks think that it would happen again with LTE. Yet alot of the sites that are fully up are areas that wimax never got to. To me its showing folks that Sprint is bringing this across the country as they promised. Its one good step, but Sprint (to me) should do a bit more. maybe a blog on their community forums showcasing this weeks upgrades, etc.

As for s4gru, trust me I'm a mod there so I know there are numerous inside contacts providing the info.

Still no 3g upgrade yet in South Jersey.... Don't get me started on lte. I'm pretty much content with that fact that this will be my second device that I've had with 4g/4glte capabilities and never get to use it...

actually I do find it odd that I only see one site that is upgraded in south jersey yet, from Old Bridge Township down to Freehold Township there are quite a few sites that have been upgraded to LTE.

You would think the Atlantic City area would have lte.. ATLEAST upgraded 3g. I live about 20 mins out of AC
 
I just wish these cities where LTE was officially activated had consistent coverage. I thought that after LTE went live in several of the major Texas cities we'd get lots of reports of "wow my speeds are awesome now." Instead, we get the random speedtest from someone who found LTE for five minutes next to the Quicki-Mart on 7th Street, and thought to run the test before it vanished.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad LTE is coming. It just seems like Sprint seriously jumped the gun in announcing live LTE coverage, when for most people in these areas it seems to be beta status at best.

Personally, I don't know why anywhere in Jersey would be seeing upgrades before NYC, but I can see the logic in it. With that said, I wouldn't think AC would be receiving any kind of upgrades before other areas of NJ.

Would you rather have nothing? I 110% can understand (and agree) with Sprint's current NV roll out model.

You would think, but if one sees the tracking of the upgrades, its all over the place. Then again Lucent is quite slow in reporting. Thats not to say they haven't though.

That's the issue. On one hand we have those that want it Now (pardon the pun), on the other hand we have those that think this is the same as wimax and that they will never get LTE, on one foot we have the group that say why is city/town/block X is getting ti before city/town/block Y and on the final foot we have areas that do have LTE but its not consistent since not every site is actually upgraded in the area.

So with both hands and feet tied, Sprint is on its back looking at the sky thinking how can we please everybody. Bottom line they can't and try to do the best and as fast as they can. As for small town USA getting it faster than Metropolis USA (NY, LA, etc) one has to realize that in dense urban areas, one has to deal with landowners, permits etc to get on top of these roofs, walls etc to install these massive antennas. Then you have cities being announced LTE but in reality its only about 50%. (To please the folks) and then as time goes on, finish upgrading the remaining sites.

All of this is outlined on s4gru and to some tiny bit extent on Sprint. But with such a massive undertaking, not everything can be reported so quickly. personally I am astonished that Robert over at s4gru can get so much done and report so much. But if it wasn't for him and his reporting, no one would know exactly what is going on with the upgrades.

So going back to the topic at hand, I can understand some getting frustrated and if some leave thats okay. Hopefully Sprint will continue and get everything upgraded an d win over the customers back.

We could all be looking at this thread in 2 years and either laugh or regret our decisions to stay or move on.

Although some may not, I have faith in Dan Hesse. The guy built the foundation for what AT&T became. He spent his first 2-3 years, as CEO of Sprint, mostly fixing a lot of the "wrong" with the company (Customer Service, stagnant tech thinking, being behind in technology advancement). I think the guy can build a new foundation for Sprint, just like he did at AT&T where the company can actually thrive fully in the future. Only time will tell what will happen, but everything that's going on right now is not even close to the problems I could have left Sprint for (prior to his becoming CEO).

I have no problems waiting through a little past (6 months) my next upgrade eligible date (assuming I use my upgrade for the Note 2), which would land somewhere at the end of 2014 (and should show signs of the finishing touches of Network Vision).
 
I was at the Valencia (Santa Clarita, CA) High School football stadium last night and got 4G on my Ltevo. I got pretty good speeds though I didn't run a test. I downloaded a 90 MB podcast in about 20-25 seconds and watched several Youtube videos with no lag. Can't wait for official and widespread 4G goodness. I felt like my phone was finally allowed to perform the way it should.
 
The Broward County/Palm Beach County areas of South Florida haven't gotten much luv either - neither WiMax nor LTE so far. Hopefully it will come soon. (The release listing has the area listed, BUT no time lines.)

Thank goodness for the Airave that Sprint sent me to help with voice conectivity!

Now that sounds awesome, and the kind of thing I was expecting to see when Sprint announced LTE live.

Nv was the cause of those horrible speeds we had to go through the same thing in Chicago luckily we have wimax. And if lte has the coverage that wimax has in Chicago than its gonna be even sweeter
 
Please merge this with another post if needed.. Just found a 4g connection in Charlotte in the Ballentyne area in the parking lot of Earth Fair to be exact. I'm averaging around 6 up and 6 down.

On a Evo V 4G related note I turned on 4G the other day in Charlotte while in the NODA area and my speeds were about 10kbps lol. It was actually slower than the 1x connection...haha

Yea the speeds here are terrible. That 4g I caught though was awesome...actually beat my Road Runner connection here. I'm hoping the 4g moves South to North as I'm in the South Blvd. area.
