Root New (and late) to rooting

I was given a used Eris that is rooted. The only hardware problem I've noted with the phone is that the trackball will not scroll left. The water indicator under the hood has not been activated.

Questions:

1) How do I tell what ROM this phone is running?

2) The phone appears to have trouble with posting to some social networks. Is this a function of the ROM, and if so what can be done to correct it?

Please let me know if I need to provide additional details. As I mentioned, this rooting stuff is all new (and somewhat foreign) to me.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer!

RR,

1) Try going into Settings -> About phone (last option at the bottom) -> Software information and the Build number section should probably have the ROM name (mine says "xtrSENSE 5.0.1" for example).

2) Can't really help with Facebook, etc.--not something I usually do other than these forums ;)

There's still some of us that check the Eris forums...I'm sure others might chime-in here, too.

Cheers and welcome the AndrodForums!

1) settings>about phone>mod version

2) not much of a social networker here but it could be the rom.

Thanks for your responses.

OK, so my Build number is 2.37.605.4 CL185970 release-keys

Another question (thanks for your patience):

Is there another ROM that is recommended for rooted Erises? I'm looking for better speed and performance - including full functionality with social networking apps.

A lot of us like condemned cm7, which can be found here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/318705-condemned-cm7-31.html#post3361661

I would also suggest flashing this after the ROM because the launcher that it comes with is a work in progress (it can be fun to play with though): http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/318705-condemned-cm7-31.html#post3364368

For instructions on rooting the phone, follow the steps in this post: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824

The build number doesn't tell me anything, it should have a mod version which says the rom your running (I guess that could be rom specific but I have two other rooted phones that show a mod version). Are you sure your rooted? Do you have the SuperUser app in your app drawer?

Looks like you might not have a custom ROM installed--i.e., you just have root capabilities (su binary and Superuser.apk installed).

+1 to metlcat's suggestion of CM7...all the cool kids are running that ;) :).

Cheers!

Question, re: Universal Root for Dummies: To download a ROM onto the SD card, so I just do this w/ my PC via a USB cord, or should I do it another way?

I have an app named Superuser Permissions in the app drawer.

That is how I do it. Make sure that you have the correct recovery (the screens with the black background and green text) that says Amon_Ra. If you don't have that follow the instructions here to get Amon_Ra: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/214240-amon_ra-1-6-2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html

If you have any other questions, don't be afraid to ask.

OK, here's the problem.

I'm working my way through the Universal Root for Dummies instructions.

I have completed the wipe data/factory reset (after Figure 39), went to Flash zip from sd card only to find I hadn't save the desired ROM to the root directory!

I know for a fact the ROM is saved to the sd card/download directory.

What should I do now?

The phone is still at the Android system recovery screen......

Edit:

I think I figured it out. Did a Nandroid recovery, then moving the ROM file to the sd card root directory, then backup, wipe, and install ROM as per the instructions.

Please tell me I haven't bricked my phone. :(

Sorry I just got back in. Ok from what I'm reading you have the rom in the download directory and not the root directory correct? Are you still in recovery?

That is correct .

I've since did a restore, moved the ROM to the sd card root, and am now trying to get back into the Android System Recover screen to re-backup, to do a wipe and continue forward.

Edit: got back into ASR screen, and seem to be moving forward successfully.

It looks like your on track. I think CS's rom already has gapps(market) in the rom so you don't have to flash that too.

Done!

I flashed the condemned cm7 ROM, and love it!

I now have a new Eris! :D

This should make the wait for my next phone in January much more bearable.

Thanks to all for your guidance and assistance.

I'm glad you got it going. As with Scary I don't hang out in the Eris forum as much as I used to anymore but I'm always watching. If there's any questions you have or need help just let any of us know. We're all one big happy family and there's several excellent folks in here that still use their Eris's on a daily basis.

Sorry guys, its been crazy busy at work today and just now was able to take a peek at this thread again.

Looks like things are all sorted-out and all is happy!

Thanks to the two cats, bob and metl ;), for taking care of you Rondacks Rule...two of our great folks that help make and keep AndroidForums an awesome place!

Cheers all :).

Yep, thanks, guys. I just got internet back last night, still no power, and both are only available based on how long I run the gas generator. And how much time I have is based on how many trees and limbs I get chopped up.

CondemnedSoul's CM7 made my Eris back to being a usable phone for many months. You should be pleased with it.

doogald, good to hear you are okay, but sorry to hear that you are still without power and having to deal with downed trees/limbs :(. You guys in the northeast certainly got walloped.

Went through downed trees and loss of power at home back in September of 2004 (tornado--glancing blow to the house, trees / telephone / power lines down, no power for two days).

Best wishes for a speedy return to normalcy.

Thanks. This is our second multi-day power outage in three years, after the big ice storm of 2008, and of course it happens occasionally otherwise, so we're kind of used to it.
