Help New Evo user - "battery use" page under settings

No I'm not here to complain about battery life.. well not exactly.

Both my girlfriend and I have had our evos for about 1 week. We read tips about disabling 3g/4g/gps/BT/wifi/syncing when not in use, and already have one of my homescreens filled with toggles. My evo makes it to the end of the night even with constant installing/uninstalling and tinkering with the phone.

So my problem is this. The battery use page(menu>settings>about phone>battery>battery use) on my phone shows this -

Smart Measure 87%
Android System 4%
Cell Standby 4%
Phone Idle 3%
Wi-Fi 2%

My girlfriend's shows

Compass and leveler 64%
Robot View Free 15%
Smart Measure 15%
Cell standby 2%
Android System 2%
Voice calls 2%

I used Smart Measure for less than 5 minutes. Its an app that measures the height of objects using the camera.. It worked extremely well, but I don't understand the battery use. My gf used compass and leveler for less than a minute. I also have compass and leveler, and used it for much longer than her, and it doesn't even show up in my list.

I did some google searching, and two other users reported the exact same number the first time I looked at my battery use - 85% (page 3 of comments)

Ratings and Comments about Smart Measure for Android

So what's the deal.. are these supposed lightweight utility programs actually using a ton of battery? Neither phone's battery drained noticeably faster after installing apps. Are they glitching out the battery use screen? Is the battery use screen accurate at all? Or am I completely misunderstanding the page?

The battery use information is a little deceiving. What it means is how much that app was using the battery while it was running. It doesn't mean how long it's been running or how much of the total charge it used. It basically means that while you ran it, it was using the battery quite a bit. Use Spare Parts to determine how long apps run, and verify they aren't holding wake locks.

I figured it was something like that.

Now my question is: I didn't use smart measure yesterday, plugged my phone in last night, just unplugged it and haven't used it today.

4m 40s since unplugged

Smart Measure 90%
android system 4%
cell standby 3%
phone idle 2%

So other stuff is clearing out when I plug it in, while smart measure is till there. Either the battery use page is "a little deceiving" to the point where imo it shouldn't even be in the system until it works or has a better interface, or mine is broken.

I have spare parts, but don't fully understand. The only thing about partial wake I've seen is under battery history. Smart Measure isn't showing up there even under total in all time, and it doesn't show up in usage statistics.

8 hours later smart measures still on the list. I ran the compass and level program which doesn't show.

Another thing is the numbers always add to 100% which wouldn't make sense the way you described it

if it makes you feel better I played angrybirds and had pandora on for about 1hr, and had the phone on airplane mode for 40 minutes out of 3.5 hours and lost almost half the battery life

Continuing on. Morning again, unplugged the phone, played on the interenet, check battery use:

10 min since unplugged

Smart Measure 82%
Android System 10%
Cell Standby 3%
Phone Idle 3%
Wi-Fi 2%

ok I'm sick of it now. It's a cool program, but either google completely dropped the ball on this page, or smart measure is doing something its not supposed to.
Uninstalled Smart Measure, went to the battery page.

14m since unplugged

Android System 52%
Cell Standby 15%
Display 15%
Wi-Fi 9%
Phone Idle 5%
Dolphin Browser 4%

So I'm 100% sure akazabam's description of the page is wrong, its not use while it is on, otherwise it wouldn't have changed 28% in 4 minutes, and the numbers wouldn't always add up to 100%.

My best guess is there is some bug in the smart measure app, and it ends up taking responsibility for all apps on the battery use page.

Hm, that stupid battery usage page is just more confusing than anything else. Maybe my understanding of it is incorrect, but I know it doesn't mean those are the percentages that your battery was used over time. It can't be. When I use maps, for example, if I use it for just a few minutes, it's very high on the list. I just avoid the whole thing altogether and use spare parts. Once you get the hang of it, it's easier to use.

Sorry, I didn't respond right away, btw. This thread sort of got lost in the shuffle.

Has nobody else noticed terrible inaccuracies? Does everyone else ignore this page and just regard it as useless? Are there known issues with apps bugging it out??

you need to give it longer to collect data...hours instead of seconds ...it also looks as if you have something going rouge but it is very difficult to tell without giving it 8-12 hours

All my posts are when I first take it off the charger and check it and am mad its still there.. lol

Even at 8-12 hours after taking it off smart measure was still in the high 70% and everything else was low, no other apps showing, not even dolphin browser, which now shows up all the time ever since uninstalling smart measure.

how is battery life after the extended time period. are you seeing drain that matches the percentages shown in use?

this is my understanding of what you are looking at there...each percentage you are viewing is a percentage of what has caused the lost charge.

you have 80% left...so a 20% loss correct

so under usage:
blah blah blah 20%
ya ya yippy 30%
blibbity blip blop 40%
screen 7%
dialer 3%

equaling 100% of that 20% loss
that was each listed items contribution to the 20% loss of battery, totaling 100% of the loss (not 100% loss)

so..in your views of battery usage compass leveler is constantly the top battery drainer

the problem is I have no idea what you actual percentage loss is in those given time periods and can not say that compass leveler is draining excess battery...

jebus I hope that makes sense to someone because I am going to have to go take a nap now

That makes a little more sense to me.

Ugh. Gf's phone. She hasn't used goggles today

9+ hrs it was at 87%

There is no way goggles used 20 times 9 hrs of cell standby and the phone is at 87%

Battery use bugs out, sometimes even with googles own software. I'm reinstalling smart measure and ignoring battery use until my phone dies on me

I have been looking around to get a definitive answer on what the percentages actually mean but have not found anything yet. I did install the app smart measure to see what would happen. The same thing happened to me too, 4 hours later its percentage is up to 75% and I only used it for less than 5 minutes.

In looking around Google, I came across a thread where a developer was having a similar issue with a game he was developing. He found out the problem and was able to fix it, I wonder if this is a similar issue? Here is what he said:

I wasn't unregistering the sensor service when the game quit. *So, even though my game would be removed from memory, I'm guessing the sensor service was continuing to run.

All fixed with the code:

SensorManager sensorMgr = (SensorManager)this.parent.getSystemService

(Context.SENSOR_SERVICE); sensorMgr.unregisterListener(...);

installed smart tools today and i'm having the same problem with my Galaxy SL (i9003).
wondering that its been so long and the problem still persists.
can anyone explain?
