New intrusive ads?!

They could do like the site I help moderate. Set up a VIP tier and disable ads for paying, VIP members. A VIP membership will generate a lot more money than annoying ads. Look up Internet Brands (who code the VB forums) and see what they're worth. A high priced VIP will send me to another site. The price should be reasonable.

As long as I have to scroll past ads my visits will be minimal.

It's really getting annoying. If you click the X to close it, then suddenly all links/buttons on the page are no longer clickable until you scroll around again. For me anyway...

Additional...after typing this post I found that I can't even hit the "post quick reply" button after closing the ad. Only works if I leave the ad open!

Your ad blocker is probably killing Javascript which in turn kills the menu bar and some other things i believe.

All it says is 'we want your money". It says nothing about the benefits, what you'll get in return for your membership payment, etc. (unless I missed it completely)

You didn't miss it. That broken image link you see in the middle of the page would normally be showing you all the benefits :(

Not likely, unless that user's ad blocker is something else. Mine is quite agressive wrt ads of all sorts (read: I see no ads), but all menus, site images and other things are still on the page and fully functional.

Many probably do just that.. I would not doubt if A.F. loses repeat members and non-member visits over those ads, especially given the proliferation of new, successful Android forum sites cropping up, some old some new.

This site is the best, ads popping up or not; I've been around to them all and do every day. But the ads are negative, not positive, and we are about being positive here, so those particular ads don't fit in with what this site is about, in my opinion.

Frisco, i could not agree more. And the ads will not stop my enjoyment of this forum. I just thought it important to explain how annoying they can be, and in particular for someone who isn't a regular.

Apologies for the completely off-topic question...but what's the difference between a moderator and guide?
Guides are in charge of mainly moving threads and reporting spam/bad posts. Mod's do everything else: lock, delete, edit posts; give infractions/bans. Basically we enforce the rules.
Thing is Frisco, I think that if I were to stumble upon this site right now, having never been to it before and open a page and see ads like that, I may never return...
That is a very valid point and one that hopefully can be addressed.

That picture really needs to get fixed soon:(. gcobb, I had the same thought-process of giving VIP members that option, so hopefully ownership looks into it.

Yup, me too. I never see any of these ads,but everything else just works.

+1

Also, if the owner and Administrators here had a policy of "hands off those ads, we need them," or some such thing, which is in place at many, many forum sites, then there would be no issue and they'd be here all of the time.

Those ads have been invading the place off and on for a long time now, but there would be no time when they are not here if it was up to the ad agencies, so there is some sort of struggle going on between them and the site owner; he is on our side, but as we can see, being the owner of a forum cluster does not give you the tools to control a multi-million dollar industry, unfortunately.

They seem to back off for a while after an episode like this most recent one, then several weeks down the line they're back, and these threads enliven again.

Well let me get a little off track here. Either the site has very little reason for banning people or the moderators aren't cocky like they are on other sites with this much activity. I was a moderator on a site with over 2 million profiles, probably 500,000 active profiles and over 50,000 new messages a day. We had to maintain our composure too for the most part. But some regulars had nothing in mind other than stirring up things.

Anyway, good job.

Shoot I had forgot to look into that busted premium image! Thanks!

Was looking for this post, yay!

......fixed.

..Thanks for the kind words. We do a fair amount of banning here, unfortunately - but all things considered it's an acceptable amount. Most members get multiple chances before a banning ensues, as well.

I'm pleased with our current set of moderators, they do a darn good job.
:)

Just thought I'd mention, I was greeted with this lil devil for the first time today:

I just got one of these for Sony. The screen covering shit at the bottom is bad enough with out rendering your browser useless.

This shit is un****ingbelievable.

That one caught me while using moderator thread tools in my Galaxy Tab, I was quite surprised to see it there of all places. I could not get rid of it, move it or back out of the page I was on. I had to dump the browser.

When I went back in to that tools page, it was not there.. it seems to be one of those random ads scripted to just come up at odd times, no pattern.

^ Very similar to the T-bolt ad that a few of us have gotten

I think Rob is probably extremely busy with CTIA right now though so this may be a delayed fix

I'm not sure who is trying to point fingers at who here, but there is no way anyone other than forum admins who have the rights/access to do anything regarding VB ads and administration. Someone once said it was a "web host" I believe, which is utter crap.

You guys are probably only hearing from 1% of the people on here who aren't happy with this. Losing 10-20 probably won't matter. When people don't return and posts drop off maybe someone will get the point.
