New intrusive ads?!

This method of advertising is very off putting. I hope it gets fixed soon!

Here is what I see:

Yep, all 3 are the same at different stages of the add.

Intrusive junk.

Fwiw, I've not seen anything like that since I installed AdBlockPlus on Firefox.

I know the owner is working on getting rid of those types of ads all the time, but meanwhile it is good to know that they can successfully be blocked.

How come I don't have that? Never even know this site shows ads. Is it only available in your neck of the woods?

No offence but the point of ads is to create revenue, blocking them entirely defeats their purpose and is rather selfish of you. I know this particular ad is intrusive but I believe the admins are working on it.

I see you're not a paying, Premium member yet. :D

Android Forums ;)

Those of us who pay for that Premium membership feel ok about not being exposed to most of the ads here. ;)

Also, those of us on the staff are volunteers, contributing our time for free, happily. :)

But you brought up an interesting issue.. I remember starting a poll a while back..

http://androidforums.com/lounge/215956-banner-ads-top-page.html about how the ads are viewed/not viewed here.

One thing I noted, as the thread moved forward, was that ad blockers were in use here by members and staff alike.

How is blocking adds that you would never be clicking in the first place be selfish?

I've never.purchased anything via an internet advert

Member exposure to ad banners is important to advertisers.

The click-throughs are what they are looking for, of course, so that the product will come closer to a point of sale, but they also need the brand familiarity, that's us seeing them, whether the ad is clicked or not.

So when we block them, we're taking away one of the things that the site owner is selling to the ad agencies.

We can offset that loss by purchasing a Premium membership here; that's one of the choices here. We can also contribute our time to the site, whether we're staffers or not, by helping others with questions, which ultimately brings more users to the site and thus more potential revenue.

Hmm... I don't think I've ever gotten that ad before. Perhaps it just happens for certain people?

No, what I'm saying is I never click banner adds on this site or any other, so me blocking them causes no loss what so ever.

Whenever I get an intrusive ad, I make a mental note never - ever to buy that product. Ads with an annoying sound also drive me nut5s. And yes, I've been seeing quite a bit of this particular ad lately.

Was under that understanding that even if you don't click them the site still gets credit for total views?? Pure speculation but that is what i always thought

The exposure to those ads probably brings revenue to the site, not just the clicking through them to the target advertiser's product site (the first sentence in my post you quoted ;)).

We're not disagreeing with you, my friend, just exploring the ins and outs of ads. :)

There are Pay Per View and Pay Per Click style ads - we use a mixture.

If the Ad blockers actually keep the ad from loading, we would not get credit for that view with PPV. If it just hides it from the end user, we should still get credit.

If you don't click them either way, we're not missing out at all period with PPCs, just PPV that are blocked from loading.

With all that said. If you want to use ad-blockers to improve your experience here - go for it! We'll live. ;)

That's very gracious of the admin, whom I respect, but I'd like to ad something. If someone is going to use an add blocker, they should have the generosity to support the forum by being contributing member. : (I lead by example in this)

Ahhh Wasn't aware of that one. Time to get the auto refresh add on back for firefox ;) (nah that would be fraud).

Kasperksy blocks adds for me at home.

i used to get the one that filled my screen, thankfully thats gone now but everytime i log on i get one right across the bottom of my screen, extremely annoying!
*as posted above*
i know sites need to use advertising space but there is a point where it is too much.
i advertise myself on a webforum where i have a banner just below the header, these kinds are fine as they dont force you to react to them.
intrusive ad's are almost as bad as people calling to sell you double glazing at 9pm when your relaxing at home.

+1. I find those big ads to be very much like telemarketing calls in that they have to be reacted to just to be rid of them.

I'd like to repeat what has to be said here many times, though: the owner of this site has stated that he hates the ads too, and is in ongoing communication with the agency that brings them here; he wants them stopped in favor of the type you mention.

I do not understand much about ads and agencies that deliver them, etc, but I can say that it's frustrating to see this issue come up over and over again over time. I've been a member here for about 13 months now and have not seen the issue resolved.

My guess is that the agencies see a monetary benefit in defying the wishes of their clients, such as Rob/Android Forums, by exposing users eyes to those big ads.. in other words, hated as they are, the intrusive ads must be working for them.

I just got this exact one too.

Honestly. Banner ads are fine, in fact I support them, but these increasingly intrusive ads?

Guys, you need to switch to a different ad network asap, seriously.
