New kies firmware 2.3.4

although, if u flash over KG6, u will need to wipe/factory reset ur phone, im afraid

What happens if i dont reset my phone to factory defaults? And can android firmwares updated to phone regardless versions (newer to older and visa versa)?

if u dont wipe, u get bootlopps (the samsung logo on boot just keeps appearing, ur phone never boots)

and im afraid i dont understand ur second question, can u rephrase? :)

can u rephrase? :)

Here goes:

Is android software invented so that one could update and downgrade as he wishes.

Like in some consoles (hacked ones) you sometimes wanted to downgrade, but that could end in bricking it.

Is it safe to downgrade android version (tho i belive KG5 is newer than KG6, as it doesnt make any sense)

Now that I have got to see :)

lol. yeah i have a dirty mind :D

hmm yeah u can safely flash an older firmware.. but although the numbers dont make sense, KG5 is newer than KG6. so KG5 is an upgrade, not a downgrade, from KG6
i flashed KG3 over KG6, thats a downgrade.. i had to wipe, but thats an issue that i think was to do with KG6, not an issue with downgrading in general.. any time u want, u can flash back to the stock firmware that ur phone comes with ... but if u have KG6, ur kinda gonna have to wipe.. if u dont wanna end up with BOOTloops. lol. from wat ive heard, the SGS2 is fairly difficult to brick up, so i wouldnt worry about it if i were u.. just follow the instructions ech time u flash, and ask someone before u do in case u have doubts :)

I found KG5 firmware, but its only 1 file .tar
In help files it says i cant re-partition with that firmware file, and heshanj said i need to re-partition. What to do now?! :)

i just checked, nothing via Kies for us Bell users :(

I was in same boat too as you with a bell canada version nothing.. so i decided to flash to 2.3.4 KG5 (official supposed) and there was no video chat so I flashed KG2 and its perfect , no issue i would recommend it to you its really easy with odin,no need to root, no need to wait on samsung canada for a late release!

Seems everywhere in the world gets to move up before the Western Countries.... What's up with that?

On Bell Canada I'm running KIES 2.0.2 with no firmware upgrade available. Honestly KIES is really crappy software........

Am I missing something? I've had the phone for a while and have read about updates and yet KIES still says NO UPDATES....

Balderick, that's exactly what i see and i suspect everyone else on Bell sees too.
It better not stay like that or i'll be following frankkduf's advice:

...the only thing i read though, is if you flash outside of Kies, you can never flash via
Kies again ...is this correct ? So, you have to keep checking the boards for the latest
update and make sure you get the correct one (?)

This is one thing that REALLY #### me off about Mobile service providers... we all bitch and complain about the same issues and yet we NEVER hear an answer from our own providers as to why THEY change things from their suppliers, whether WE can make the changes we desire, or WHEN they plan to make any changes of their own.

I hate being held hostage by a company that You and I are paying relatively large sums of money to month after month for their undisclosed reasons.

From what i know , flashing an official update like KG5 will still allow you to use kies. But if you flash a rom like frankenstein KGx its no gonna work till you flash back to a official one! Anyway, who really wants to wait for nothing on kies to get us an update when you can easily flash a rom in 2 min :P

How EXACTLY does one go about doing this. I am a relative newcomer to this level of smartphone and have no experience with such things.

No experience needed, any beginer could do it, just first download odin 1.85 then download the rom you want (for now i would recommed you KG2) you can find them on xda forum (sorry I havent enough time to give you the link) and then search for a guide on google its really easy and always the same procedure for flashing a rom and rooting

for all of those asking about KG2 and other firmware, click here for a guide how to flash KG5, the newest official firmware for the SGS2, running 2.3.4. download the OXA KG5 firmware from the list, and flash via Odin. instructions are pretty clear :)

and yes, its official, not a frankenstein package, so Kies will recognize it, and once there's a newer update available on Kies, u can still get it.. although, after using Odin, very few people still use Kies :D

Ok, please tell me, how do i update this over KG6, wipe or no wipe? :)

just follow the instructions on the link i posted above :) if u have KG6 at the moment.. flash KG5 over it.. it probably wont restart, u'll see the samsung logo load over and over again.. press and hold Vol Up + Power+Home buttons to get into recovery, do a factory reset.. then ur phone will start up, none of ur data on it.. but running KG5 :) u could do a backup if ur rooted, before u flash.. even if ur not rooted, android backup service usually backs up all ur stuff.. so u should get back most of ur apps n settings..
