Just to clarify AF's position, unlocking a locked bootloader or phone isn't frowned upon here. In fact, many of us encourage Android enthusiasts to push their devices (and their skills) as far as they are comfortable doing so. For example, I had to unlock my locked Nexus in order to root it and put a custom ROM on it.
What we DO frown on is spoofing a phone to look like something it's not.
However, it is my understanding that a Master Subsidy Lock (MSL) is often needed to manually activate a device after flashing a custom ROM. So unless we find out that there are nefarious motives behind it, searching for the MSL is a perfectly legit activity
