New Optimus V versions work with wifi tether.

1) Run Gingerbreak and root new version Optimus V.

2) Find and install Wireless Tether for Root.

Name your network, and password protect it. Works perfectly. In fact so good I have been playing WoW off my wifi tether for about three weeks. I was bummed because I thought I wouldn't get the hotspot feature in my wife's new V (her old one is gone). Getting it I thought would involve flashing a new rom, which isn't very hard, but there is that issue with the new screen driver.

Anyways to make a long story short, after rooting this works on pretty much all the newer OV phones. I've tried on a few of them.

Yay! I need to stick the phone back in the window (in a basement) and get back to Cataclysm. Cheers.

You're tireless, amiga. ;) I feel like I should confess: I hotspotted my phone once, for ten minutes, right after I moved & before my modem arrived (actually it had arrived but I hadn't figured out which neighbor had stolen it at that point:rolleyes:). Can I get some absolution? :o

Every time you two get together and talk I'm reminded of a couple of Junior High school girls.
Whatever keeps you feeling young.
Me,I still ride the shopping carts.

I won't presume to speak for my good friend NNF, but I was never a typical junior high school girl, even when I was in junior high a hundred years ago when they still called it junior high.:p

I think I better stay away from any more attempts at humor.
I did not mean for you to take offense. Sorry

The one thing that I struggle with, when considering the forum beating one might take for tethering, is that my entire data usage for the month is typically less than 150 megabytes. Yet, a user that doesn't use tether can crank down a couple gigabytes watching netflix movies or steaming audio over 3G, and that's apparently no problem.

You're failing to see the difference. The difference is one way breaks the terms of service, and the other way does not.

I don't fail to see the difference at all, the difference between following the letter of the law vs. using practical common sense. What I fail to see is the purpose of little old me assuming the role of moderator and jumping down someone's throat.

Relax. No one has jumped down anyone's throat here. There's been no angry tones, angry emotes, or anything of that nature. Most of the folks here are easily able to disagree without getting offended. If you feel otherwise, perhaps public forums are not your thing.

Darlin', my point is that there is an entire area of this very forum dedicated to the rooting of this phone, which apparently explicitly violates the VM terms of service. So, my thoughts are that we let the moderators police the forums in the manner that they see fit rather than allowing users to pick and choose which rules to enforce.

It's my birthday, and my boyfriend has made reservations for us at Maggiano's. I'll not let you bait me into an argument so this is where I stop conversing with you and place you on forum ignore.

Ciao

Heck, best I can tell, just changing out the micro-sd card could be viewed as an "altering of the hardware," violating the service agreement.

I'm sorry but installing a tethering app to circumvent an vendor provided hotspot is considered by most carriers to be theft. Whether or not they choose to prosecute is their decision. It is the policy of Android Forums to not allow these discussions because it places the forum at risk if the carrier decides to look for co-conspirators.
