New Sholes.info 2.0.1 ROM w/ 2.1 Apps

No longer available...it was on alldroid.org, but they were hacked and it wasn't posted again after that.

If you all want to share, I'm willing to accept... I'm new to this on the droid (although I am a programmer), but I'm having a lot of fun with it!

First of all let me say that REDFLEA pm'd me and was working on getting BirdMans V4 to me to upload. Everybody should be thanking him and he gets mad props for helping others :D

On another note I was lucky enough to chat with Birdman himself who subsequently gave me the link to his V4 as well as his permission to share, so everybody be sure to thank him as well  Over at Alldroid of course.

hey can someone explain how to use the update.zip to me please? ive only ever flashed with nandroid. thanks

Just put it on your sdcard and in recovery select install, then choose update.zip. Make sure to wipe anything it says to wipe first.

DAMN YOU GrandMaster.

Excuse me, Grand Master B, but can you give me a little bit of info regarding this V4 that you have linked to? I understand, of course, that it's a version of 2.1, but can you give me a brief list of known bugs, and known upgrades over other ROMS?

Is the live wallpaper still a bit laggy?

DAMN YOU GrandMaster.

My, my, there is something in the air tonight? A lovers' quarrel, perhaps?

JK

But I hear the distant rumbles of a coming storm, CRP's giant robot warrior, the great Optimus Prime, versus GMB's vicious and insidious mafia tactics, where a "kiss" means impending doom!

Oooh! I'm getting a bag of popcorn!

Ok my recovery verison just wasnt new enough because I had just returned to stock from a previous endevor. Using SirSpychoS 0.99.2b recovery select Install, then Allow update.zip installation, then Install/sdcard/update.zip (depreciated)

I wiped first, I always do. make sure you have everything backed up if necessary.

I have sirPsycho 14.0, so it won't work for me?

How do I install SirPsycho 0.99?

and can you tell me a bit more about V4?

Not sure if it will work with 14.0 or not, prolly will just try and if it aborts you need to update the recovery. I use DRH pro to update my recovery or follow the steps at Sholes.info

Birdmans V4 is a 2.0.1 based rom enhanced with a 5 screen 2.0.1 launcher, 2.1 clock, 2.1 Music, 2.1 Gallery multi-touch browser etc It was the last ROM BirdMan released before joining the Sholes.info team

EDIT It would probably be wise to update your recovery to the newest anyways because it is required on all the newer roms.

I got the memory leak issue with the 1.1 ROM also, but this time I decided to give it another chance.

I used Sholes' stock 2.0.1 nandroid image and restored that. Then I installed 1.1 over it, wiping DATA just to be doubly sure. I choose not to install the brightness hack or app, or open vpn, or the 2.1 launcher.

I redownloaded my apps, got my homescreens and widgets set up identical to my previous setup (which I choose to preserve the data and install 1.1 over). So far, I have yet to run into the memory issue.

I'm fairly confident it will stay this way too, because I could always slow the 1.1 ROM down to a crawl by leaving the browser open. I've now had it running for 5 hours, along with the usual other apps, and have yet to experience the slowdown.

I think the reason lots of people are having very different experiences with this ROM (evident in the threads at alldroid) is this factor.

Not saying you guys should wipe and reload the ROM, because birdman's v4 is just fine and it's a lot easier to install over and keep all your data, but I just wanted to see what would happen.

Anyways, I'll report back if things go south, but it's looking good for now.

I always wipe data and cache partitions before flashing a rom and I pass on installing several items like the tethering, news weather widget, 2.1 launcher or openvpn. I just read over at Alldroid that killing the browser fixes it temporarily(berserker himself) or better yet disabling the compcache fixes it. I cannot do either of these as I am not running the rom anymore. All I know is it took very little use on my end to drop below 20MB and the lag becomes very apparent.

I would be very much interested in seeing your results Fabolous...

Not to get off the subject this Birdman rom is pretty good. Just some lag with typing.

Well, no changes from before. I'm still running smooth, and it's been about 10 or more hours now. Going into the terminal and typing 'free' gives you a report of how much memory you have available. I combine that with using ATK to get an idea of the performance the ROM is affording.

So currently, in ATK, it shows I have 18 processes running. I go into terminal and 'free' results in ~45MB memory free.

To me, that seems very reasonable (or even good?). Either way, I'm not too caught up with the numbers, because what really matters, is that the device is still very responsive, even after intensive browser and app use.

I don't know what I did different than you, since you say you wipe every time you install. I did elect to not go with weather widgets this time around, since they changed the skin. I'm using beautiful widgets this time, and also not using weatherbug. Other than that, it's the exact same apps/setup as before, when I didn't wipe and it lagged.

I'm going to call it a night, and hopefully tomorrow it's still maintaining that level of performance.

Yeah I agree. Birdman's ROM is solid! If you're feeling adventurous, you can even flash the overclock kernel form some bonus performance. I got a very good 4400ms BenchmarkPi score that way.

I've been using the Sholes rom for a few days and, while it's pretty awesome, I can't bear the slowdowns and the FCs. Thanks for reposting the Birdman rom, I'm gonna load it up now! :D
