Root new to rooting, basic questions i havent been able to find

I just rooted my Marquee and ive read countless threads trying to figure it all out. but some things im still stuck on are
1. if you download a theme does it have to be made specifically for the rom youre running
2. are there app markets designed for root users?
and
3. can sprint detect that you are rooted

dumb questions i know but i havent been able to find the answers

I'm not big into theming so I don't know for sure, but I think themes are usually built for a specific rom. If you are having trouble finding a theme for your device/rom here is a universal guide to help you do some theming of your own: http://androidforums.com/faqs/633037-guide-how-wip-easy-theming.html

2. are there app markets designed for root users?
I don't think there are any big root markets around yet. Maybe because Google allows most of the root only apps in the play store...
Here is one to check out: Fireplace Market

and
3. can sprint detect that you are rooted
They can't tell without looking at the phone if that's what you mean? They might suspect if you are abusing free wireless tethering and they can cancel your contract if you are. They could certainly tell if you brought it in for repairs. They may not notice if you returned to a stock rom though. That said, Sprint doesn't really care about rooting. Here is a link to their official policy on dealing with rooted devices: Sprint Root Policy which basically says to inform the customer of the risks of rooting, and then follow normal procedure with replacement or repair.

No dumb questions here. It's how we learn.

Sweet thanks man. ive been going crazy reading thread after thread after thread learning all that i possibly can about it. its pretty rad

Sprint doesn't even care if you're rooted. That's the great thing. :)

Themes can be ROM specific. It depends how customized that ROM is.

I'd suggest sticking to googles play store. Rooting isn't like jail breaking an iPhone to be able to get a new market. Google allows rooting apps and supports root

Just wanted to add that most all of the themes that I've seen ARE ROM SPECIFIC. CM7 themes are for the CM7 ROMs, CM9 for CM9 ROMs, CM10 for CM10 ROMs, MIUI for MIUI ROMs , etc., etc. . CTMOD themes are sometimes specific for the CTMOD build. Older CTMOD themes won't work on newer version of CTMOD sometimes. It's best to check the theme to make sure it will work. The theme thread should say what build it will work on.

The apps on Google Play will say if root is needed for the app to work.

As far as I know, the only way for a carrier to tell if you are rooted is if you have to send the phone in for repair and they do a hands on inspection of the device.

Can you get CM on the marquee? I checked the supported devices section on the website but it wasn't listed. Is there some way around that? It seems like most mods are for cm

There is a development thread in the All Things Root section that you can read up on. There is a lot of development going on there tonight. The ROMs are still in the Alpha stage and there are several things that don't work on them. Give it a read and see. I have ran the AOKP Alpha 3 version and it's nice. As I said earlier, there is a lot of stuff going on over there tonight. Check it out.

Right? I thought I was awesome for figuring out how to root my phone and then I read that and I'm allllll derped out now

LMAO!!!!!! Oh...... I know exactly what you mean.:rofl::rofl::D

Don't feel bad, there are only a few in here that have the knowledge he does when it comes to building a ROM.

Me, I'm not one of them. :p

Lol Do they do all the developing on the phone itself??

The actual development goes on using a computer to write the code and build the ROM.

Testing happens on the device itself

You can train a monkey to build a ROM using the automated tools(I'm proof :p) but real development is much more involved than that

Tdm is working on the CM9, CM10 & AOKP ROMs. Bloodawn made CTMod, the Hyperkernel and is working on MIUI. Craptorman is working on CM7 and Monster did MarkyBeats. I think that about covers it. :D

Dsixdas kitchen comes to mind for ROM building/moding. Its mainly for HTC devices though if I remember correctly.

There's another kitchen online you can use to do theming automatically.

I probably spent 45 minutes making what i thought was the greatest damn theme on the face of the earth, and then uploaded the systemUI and the Framework.apk and it shot me an error log. What do you think that was?

Not sure what happened. There are quite a few YouTube videos that show you how to use the Kitchen. That's how I learned to use it.

This one is OK. It shows the basics.

How to create a theme for your android rom! - YouTube

DAMN!!! ive tried 15 different times and keep getting an error log at the end of it. do you think it has to do with how the systemui and framework.apk files were unziped from the CTmod SYS files?

Try a different download. There is a chance that the files are corrupt. When you finally get the new CTMod download, just double-click on the zip file and pull the files out to your desktop. Make a folder and put them there for future use and safe keeping.
