Root New to Rooting -- update question.

Hi, i purchased my HTC evo off of ebay a couple weeks ago and have been recieving notifications for an update. I am currently using a sprint phone for Boost mobile. Apparently i am not able to update while rooted normally, but how do i go about updating it otherwise. i dont know how to re-root the phone i dont think, im not technologically challenged or anything i just havent learned it yet. i cam currently using andriod verison 2.3.3. And one more question -- does anyone know what this update is for if i even need it. please and thank you in advance.

welcome to the party, i mean forum good sir!!

The update might be the prl, it might be the android OS, it might be some apps. Can you provide a screenshot of the updates its asking you to perform? if you pull down the notif bar and hold the power button, you should be prompted to do one of several actions, one of which being the screenshot. It might be something as soft as some app updates. If thats the case, then youre all good, if its the prl, then im not sure what to tell you as the boost folk are in a whole different boat than the sprint folk like me.

I guess long story short here is, some more info would be of extreme help here, and again, welcome to the awesomeness of a: the Evo b: this kick ass forum!! There are about 6 people in here (youll shortly see who im talking about if you stick around) that should be on some software developers payroll :)

here is a screenshot of the latest update of HTC software it wants to download.

DO NOT ACCEPT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow, yeah your phone looks like it is still in froyo. people have had issues with that update while being rooted.

here is a thread i started about that update:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ur-gingerbread-2-3-3-evo-but-now-you-can.html

all you need to do is flash a rom. here is some great roms that are current and are but with a stock feel.

MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]. download the full wipe version.

[ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale - xda-developers

for flashing instructions use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. just skip the rooting process and go to the after root section. it has plenty of info that will help you out including how to flash roms.

you might also want to check what recovery you have as well. i would recommend amon ra if you are not already.

a rom is what your phone is running. it is kind of like an os for the phone. basically a rom is a sofware update for the os. froyo, and gingerbread, and now ice cream sandwhich and jellybean are all software updates. so by flashing i mean installing the new os update(rom) onto your phone.

so all you will need to do to get updated is flash(install via recovery) a custom rom that has the update. the ones i linked you to are all current and is waaaaay better then stock. i would really suggest that you read the guide i linked you to.

Yeah dude, don't accept it man!! The best thing to do is to update your os (operating system) to something gingerbread or beyond. But beware that nothing beyond gingerbread has everything working. Most every ics and jb rom has either the ffc(front facing camera) or 4g as nonfunctional. Beyond that, there are many great roms out there that use the newest versions :)
