Root New to rooting

OK i've had my EVO for quite some time now and have not been happy with the blote ware and the lack of modifying i can do. Then i find out about rooting. Woohoo!! Now I have some questions. I have seen videos on using my PC to do this and Then some useing just my phone, is using just my phone any less risky? Or should I just stick with useing my PC? Next my wife is adiment about me NOT rooting (mainly for voiding the warrenty) and I have a friend who said he has heard from people who have jail broken and rooted their iphones and androids and they have all become slow and bogged down. Is this a common problem? Or are they just doing something wrong? Lastly once rooted how hard is it to un-root my phone if I need to take it back to sprint for some reason?

Hello!
Read up in this guide
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/491123-evo-4g-all-things-root-guide.html
Rooting does not bog down phone as long as you know how to/ and know what you are doing but that's why we are here! Ask anything and you will get and answer. But read, read, read..
Yes you can unroot no problem.:)
If done properly, rooting opens up to lots of customization and making phone faster, look better etc.
Just read thru the guide I posted and if you have any questions, we are here.
:D

if you are on the cusp on rooting the phone or not, let me push you over the edge.

ROOT IT! you will never look back. it will free you of what htc and sprint has held back on this phone. once rooted your phone will:
1. perform better
2. better battery life
3. more customizable
4. you can get rid of sense and enjoy pure android and not what htc wants you to enjoy.
5. we have sense 2.1, sense 3.0, sense 3.5 and even sense 4.0 (ICS) now on our evos. and they are something that the evo 4g will ver get officially. but our dev community is AMAZING!
6. better troubleshooting. you have more tools at your disposal if something goes wrong. on an unroot phone all you can do is a factory reset, thus loosing all data in the process. but rooted phones has way more options to fix things. all this means that it is really hard to brick your phone.
7.you can try out themes, skins, splashscreens, bootanimations, scripts (which can make your phone run faster), kernels, and custom roms. all of which translate to a ton of customization according to how you want your phone to look and run.

i'll end it with 7 but i can go on on about rooting. yes it does void your warranty. but that only covers the first year. if you have insurance then you can always unroot the phone or flash a stock rom and take it in. so it is not the end of the world if you need some service on it while it is rooted.

hope i have pushed you over the edge to root. and the thread that mikey linked to is a great place to start. and like he said. please feel free to ask questions. we are here for you.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Root my friend root !:D

Yeah I've been going through the guide and other threads to familiarize myself with what needs done. It doesn't sound too bad. one thing I'd really like is to see a guide like the one on here but a bit more indepth. AS in keep what is in the guide but throw in what it actually is that im doing to the phone why i'm doing it. I know a bit about computers but a more indepth explaination would be interestig and it would help me understand how/why all of this works. as opposed to "because the guide told me to do it".

ok lets start with getting some info from you. we need to know if your phone is up to date or not? best thing to do is go into your bootloader. power off then press and hold power+vol down. at the top of the bootloader screen will be the info we need. post what you see there and then we can start giving you more precise info.

edit: almost forgot to mention that you might need to disable fastboot. settings>apps>uncheck fastboot.

Rooting voids your 1 year manufacturer warranty from HTC. I
This does not prevent you from getting service through sprint or the insurance company.

Since this is a 2 year old phone, not many people have the 1 year warranty left anyway

If i root will i loose any contacts or apps?
No, they should be linked to your google account...both contacts and apps-free and paid...google will remember them.
After you root or flash a rom, then you simply sign into google and your contacts will sync. You may have to redownload the apps however, you can use My Backup to backup your apps to your sd card

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5yZXJ3YXJlLmFuZHJvaWQuTXlCYWNrdXAiXQ..

I have not used that app, as I like to re download apps but after you are rooted you can use Titanium Backup....its better and worth it...we'll worry about that app later.:D

Once you've rooted it you'll wonder why you waited so long. If I had it to do over again I'd do it the first time I had the chance.

I will add that the HTCdev method will root the phone to the point of being to flash roms and kernels all you want, but it will not give you s-off(security off). That's not any big deal really unless you want to get into boot animations and such.

Your contacts will be synced thru Google. Any apps you might have paid for you can get back from google. Once rooted you should get Titanium Backup....pay for the pro version it's well worth it. TB will let your restore your apps anytime you flash a new rom
