Root new to the captivate.

So i have a unique situation.
I just recieved this phone asa gift/throw away/give away.
I am planning on using it as a tablet and not much more. Its recently gotten a factory reset. That was minutes ago.
Now i want to root it.
Heres my questions.
1. Do i need a custom recovery already installed?

2 whats this lag fix i read about to root?

3 no computer access till i get home. I wanna do it now. (not going home till tomorrow night.)
3. Im no stranger to root. Got a prevail.

So yeah the main one is do i needva custom recovery to do the root?

Decided to go all out.
But i come to find out all the links are dead
can anyone help me for the root?

Edit: i am having problems with the update file.
ive done it normally
and ive tried also having it in usb debug mode and i cant get it to accept the update.zip

well i now have root. uninstalled a bunch of bloatware.
and am happier.

now i was trying to install a font. but apperently i cannot do this manually.
as in copy and paste it to system/fonts folder.

i was wondering if anyone knows how id be able to do this?
