New Unlock Screen Function

Lets put it this way. Since the update I haven't accidentally put my phone on silent yet. With the old lock screen, I would somehow always end up with my phone on silent, which led to numerous missed calls.

DITTO! Can't tell you how many calls I missed because I accidentally put the phone on mute.

The new scheme should prevent that.

It is a manly thing. And since this phone is targeted to men, it makes sense. That swipe was definitely more "girly".

Barbara - you are so right! I have never seen a product try to be so macho, it's almost laughable! from the entry screen to that new clock font...just bizarre.
I mean, I'd die if I had a Hello Kitty phone, but what's wrong with the neutral stuff?

Lucky customization takes care of a lot of it, LOL. And I like the handset squareness.

I liked the old one better. It seems like I had to swipe less distance to get it to unlock. The one I actually have to have my thumb drag across the whole screen. Old one seemed to have momentum to push it the rest of the way. I think it looked better, and the animations were way better, IMO. The new one is much bigger so more touch friendly?? I had no problem with the size of the old one though. Definitely would rather have the old one.

I noticed that under framework-res.apk file the pictures for the old slider are still there. So, I'm guessing they just changed something around in the xml file for it to read the new pics.

Yeah. The old one was a swipe. This one is a press and drag. It's not as efficient. But it doesn't make me hate the phone.

the screen now isnt "press and drag" its still just drag.. at least with mine.

this is such a silly topic, but i guess ill put in my 2 cents.. :)

i think the new screen does make the phone more DROID~ish, but with my pink cover, i took away all masculinity right away :D

Does anyone know how to turn off the haptic feedback when unlocking the phone? First you get a regular vibrate when first touching the tab and then a super vibrate when you actually unlock it (hope that makes sense). It's kind of annoying.

I don't mind either lock screen, I just want to know how to hack "Verizon Wireless" off of them. Anyone know? They feel compelled to put their name on every possible aspect of the phones they carry and have tainted what would be a nice-looking lock screen.

+1
And would also like the option for the old lock screen

Neither the old or new lock screen shows Verizon Wireless on my phone.

It's not branding in in a way, it's just announcing the service. If you were on another carrier, it will say theirs. It's been a long time, but I remember my cell banner changed as I traveled from state to state. I believe that may have been roaming too.

I do remember some phones allowing you to change the banner message, too bad we can't do it here.

Honestly, visually I don't like either the old or the new screen. I do however like the new Clock font, but hate the weird Verizon Wireless placement.

Atleast with the old screen it made sense and the time and verizon branding was centered on the screen and everything seemed more unified.

Now it's just... I dunno segmented. I do like the "I visual feel" of the new screen but compared to the previous lock screen it seems more segmented and my eyes don't "flow". I think they're closem just need to bring the unification back.

i want to know why they can't make an unlock screen that follows the natural motion of my thumb for one handed use. my thumb doesn't bend that way holding it normally.
I'm happy with the new unlock, but you're right about a more natural motion would be better. Using my right thumb it would be easier if it the unlock was a left to right diagonal up instead of horizontal.

Upper right hand corner. "Verizon Wireless" on my new lock screen.
I must be lucky; I don't have any Verizon logos on the phone except one in dark gray silk-screened on the battery cover. Nothing else software-wise to indicate what service I'm using.

As far as the unlock screens go, I also prefer the old screen and the clock placement. The arch was closer to the natural motion my thumb makes, verses the weird "pulling" motion I have to make now, which uses more of my hand. It's definitely not worth returning the phone, but I do wish there was a way to choose between the two screens. It's too much like the iDon't unlock screen now. I don't think the arch was "girly" or "manly" -- it's an arch which has no gender. It did, however, remind me of the old rotary dial phones, so it had kind of a cool retro look.

Just some food for thought, but the old dial-look unlock is still present in the framework-res pack.

Personally, I just got rid of the whole thing and kept only the buttons.

i do prefer the old screen, but it doesn't make much difference. i have found that you don't have to "tap then drag" you can still just swipe. and you can still swipe in a moderate arc and it works just fine. it presents no functional difference to me. but i did like to watch the arc spin a bit like a rotary phone. never had a problem of accidentally putting it into silent mode.

also, how is the layout "girly"? i'm not seeing it. i mean yes, the device is a little boxy, but is that an inherently masculine thing? i could be off base here. i just never considered it that way.

I like the new unlocking feature better. The arch wasn't as responsive as the cross screen swipe. It would often roll back on me. I guess since this phone "is geared towards men" then it needed something more "masculine" ...tho idk how one differs from the other in that sense.

I didn't notice the Verizon banner until after the update... and I preferred having the clock centered, but it's not like I sit and stare at the unlock screen all day long, so it's not that big of a deal, really. I do miss the spin of the old arch, though... it gave it "character," I guess.
