New version of Swype for DROID ... just installed.

Do u have a link to that? I have been using the HTC themed swype which I really like, but it is a .thm file so I am using the older MetaMorph cause I have yet to see .xml version. But now on froyo my MetaMorph doesn't work says I don't have root, yet all my other apps that require root work.

Here is a link to themed swype apps. Just install using astro or another file explorer.

Not meant to be offensive at all, but I feel like the official "go here for themed swype" guy. :D I think I've posted the link on this forum about 10 times now lol.

Just installed mine on stock 2.1 too and it works fine, don't have to change between the stock keyboard and swype upon unlock anymore :D

For those of you who have the new Swype working, what version is it? I've tried about 4 times (I know, the definition of insanity -- doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for a different result) and the version the Swype installer is downloading (.7625) is completely unusable on my Droid.

UPDATE: Well, call it insanity or persistence, the 6th time I tried, new Swype beta seems to be working perfectly. Getting ready to reboot and see if it's still working.

UPDATE2: Still working great after a reboot, no need to employ the old switch input method -- I'm feelin' pretty happy about this! What do ya know?

UPDATE3: I just ran a zipalign_apks script prior to doing a nandroid backup, and thought it was interesting to note that the new Swype beta isn't zipaligned. According to Google:
"Zipalign is an archive alignment tool that provides important optimization to Android application (.apk) files. The purpose is to ensure that all uncompressed data starts with a particular alignment relative to the start of the file. . . . The benefit is a reduction in the amount of RAM consumed when running the application. This tool should always be used to align your .apk file before distributing it to end-users." [emphasis added]

Just installed the latest Froyo release with Fab's theme and a new kernel ... so I thought I'd try this again. The procedure (for me) was totally different. And it installed and registered without hesitation. All to say, it werks!!!

Now ... I gotta see what they actually did with this "update".

I found the biggest annoyance with swype was writing words with apostrophes and any mix of letters/numbers/symbols (such as dates/times/passwords)

Plus no voice-to-text button.

When they fix all that I'll give em another shot.

One of your issues is addressed in this version. It now recognizes when apostrophes are needed much better.

Can everyone put version numbers in their posts please? I have no idea what version some of these posts are referring to so I can't post additional info.

Right now Swype version 1.56.30.7625 runs flawlessly on 2.2..... I haven't had a single issue.

so is there any major difference? functions better? smarter? looks better?

i'm on the .5612 version right now and its working fine. don't feel like upgrading if there's no point. i don't wanna lose all my saved words, because that's what happened last time. that really got me mad. all those custom words i saved got wiped out.

I was able to do apostrophed / contracted words without an issue.

My biggest issue was that when I tried to do a Capital I I invariably get jimi instead....

Yea that jimi problem is about the only issue I'm having with it. I've learned to just tap I and let the auto capitalization do it's thing

Other than that, Swype (5612) has been running just fine on 2.2 for me.

I just installed it and have no problems with it at all. In fact, I believe it is faster, more responsive, and more customizable than the last version.

Swype version 1.56.30.7625.t100 on an unrooted MotoDroid with Android version 2.1.

Actually, when I read this post initially, I was hesitant on downloading it. But, decided to back up the "good" copy and took the leap. Downloaded it and installed it. Boom! "Swype does not support this device's screen size," or something to that effect. No problem, I had issues downloading the original one as well. I remembered I was advised to re-download the installer and re-install. Did that and bam! Perfect version! Works great. No issues. I don't have to go through that "Input Method" jive every time I boot up anymore. Nice clean install and it even has nice typing sounds and better interface.

  • Added better context sensitivity for the “magic button” (go/search/enter/smiley)
  • Added automatic apostrophe insertion for contractions (e.g. won’t, don’t, wasn’t, etc)
  • Added the Italian language dictionary
  • Improved sensing of field type to prevent the display and addition of passwords to the UDB (user dictionary)
  • Improved suppression of auto-spacing in fields such as URLs and email addresses
  • Updated the built-in dictionary to include several common words that were previously missing
  • Rewrote some settings descriptions to be more clear on their functionality
  • Fixed licensing issue causing “Limited Functionality” errors when rebooting devices running Android 2.0 and later
  • Fixed licensing issue causing some users to receive an “Incorrect ID” error when installing Swype
  • Fixed a bug where manually typing some words with word-prediction enabled would cause Swype to crash
  • Fixed a bug which caused some words added to the UDB to erroneously override other words when word-prediction is enabled
  • Many other minor bug fixes!

Got the new swype...it seems improved, time will tell. One question, I do not like the clicks or typing sounds...anyone know how to turn them off?
Thanks in advance for the help.

You can turn off sound and vibration in the setting under settings>keyboards>swype.

Maybe your version is different, but the one I got (.7625) has the "Audio Feedback" option checked, but greyed out so I can't change it.

On another note, I now have my new Swype Beta version themed:

ugh. i can not get this to work. i've already installed and uninstalled 3 times now. everytime after it finishes installing, i get a different message. first time it said using on an unknown device. second time it was registering and then said the same thing. 3rd time it was registering and then said registering this license failed. i'm gonna try and 4th time and see what happens. did anyone else have this problem? i uninstalled my previous swype first also.

I had to try 6 times before I had success. My best advice is to keep trying -- but make SURE all vestiges of the original are gone. Check in /data/data to ensure that there's nothing there for com.swype.android.inputmethod and also go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Filter>All and make sure that neither Swype nor com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk is still in the list.

i checked those places and no swype leftovers but it still doesn't work. i'm gonna try it a couple more times and hope it works.
