The best policy is definitely to follow the prerequisites given by the developer.
I agree 100%. By doing this, at least you can say, I did what you told me and it didn't work. What now?
Doing it your own way, only leads to the ultimate reply of "you should have followed directions" if things don't work.
I went the route of Ubuntu LiveCD, and even called up a Linux guru I know to give me basic linux command tips for navigating, untarring, and getting it all done.
I also suggest you follow the directions at the Juopunutbear website, not some guide on this forum. Although the guides may cover the same material, the Bear crew makes it clear on their website to follow all of their directions, and nobody else's. I still suggest that people read up on it here and that way they are more ready for any issues they encounter. I for one didn't need to OK Superuser during the procedure like many of the guides mention. I actually got nervous because I thought something had gone wrong.
