Root Newbie in need of help

I am running update 2.3.9.MB810 on my Droid X. I updated to Froyo before the update became officially. From what I can see from reading various threads, I am way behind. I have never rooted before but want to learn how just to get the most out of this beast. How should I proceed? Should I go back to 2.2 and use the official update? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Download and rum Maderstock340.zip. It'll bring you up to date.

You said you have never rooted before, so if your not rooted Google Z4 root, download that app and your just a couple clicks away from root access.

Next you need Droid X Bootstrapper (2 bucks from market; but you can get it free in various forums and the devs website)

Then download the zip that Steven linked you too and flash it with DX bootstrapper, come on back if you need any help

No it should not ....I as well as others have helped people update from 2.3.9 with maderstcok zip and all went as should

great, I didn't think it would cause a problem, but I wanted to send him here b/c I wasn't positive and didn't want to send him into bricking his phone.

I was using 2.2 froyo (system version 2.3.9.MB810) and this seemed to work ok.

It updated to 2.2.1 (system version 2.3.340.MB810) just fine (had to *228) but it kept all my programs/etc.

I was rooted before I started. It then let me update to the OTA update.
