newbie question about rooting

we all know that rooting is "do-at-your-own-risk" act to get the full performance of an android phone and this may lead to bricking if you didn't do it correctly. my question is what part of the phone will be bricked? the software (android OS) or the hardware?? thank you for those who will reply.

Bricking refers to software. Not hardware. Whats going to happen is that it simple won't work. Think of it as a car with no gasoline. It has all the parts working and in good condition but it doesn't have what it needs to start (turn on).

so you are saying that when you bricked your phone, it can be revive again and again? just install the software (android OS for example custom rom)?

thanks for your valuable time. :)

Bricking your phone is a term that is misunderstood. I will try my best to explain it and hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge on the subject can elaborate more.

A Bricked phone is unusable. It cannot not be flashed to or fixed with a piece of software. A Few things can brick the phone:
1. A Bad Radio Update - Or an Interupted Radio Update.
2. A Non Volital Memory error. (Seems to be the bootloop of death)
3. An Actual piece of hardware that is needed at bootup.

I'm sure there is more however this area is not really my expertice and these are my understandings.

A Bricked phone will never get out of the "Splash" Screen. It will either stay there forever or it will continually "Loop" It never makes it to the software.

so rooting will not brick your phone's hardware? just the software itself?

Rooting doesn't 'brick' anything - doing something incorrectly during rooting is what does the damage. No it doesn't affect the hardware but that's immaterial - as Argedion stated a device that's truly 'bricked' is nothing more than a very expensive paperweight. Fortunately that's a rare occurence.
