Root Newbie questions on BACKside ROM

Futzy

Lurker
First of all, thanks so much to everyone who has posted the guides in this forum on how to root and change roms on the Optimus V, I found it easy to follow along and was able to get the BACKside ROM working fine. However, I have 2 questions about it:

1. I didn't like losing the swype keyboard, I've gotten very used to that, is there a way to keep or re-get the swype keyboard on the other ROM?

2. I heard that 2.3 was supposed to be much better for battery life, but I was actually getting less battery life after upgrading. Are there some settings I need to check, or some apps I need to get to see the improved battery life?

Oh, I forgot to mention, you should re-calibrate your battery every time you flash a new ROM. There's great guides, both here as well as at XDA, but if you need help, we're here.

Do you really? Why is that brotherswing ? What about updates? Is there a battery calibration app thats free.

@Andy - I do. I don't bother if its an update, but if its a new ROM, I re-calibrate. I don't use an app, I use wipe battery stats under advanced in recovery. There is, however, an app for that, if you're not comfortable playing around in the recovery. You can find it here.

Just wiping the battery stats? Do you have to make sure the battery has a full charge plus a few minutes more?

Well, yeah. Sorry, assumed that step. Basically, what I do is charge my phone while flashing, I wipe my battery stats when I wipe Dalvik. Let the phone drain until it shuts itself off, then charge back up to 100%.

After I got in this habit, I've noticed about twice the battery life of Stock.

I'm going to be doing this right now. Two night ago my phone was plugged in and stopped charging at 86%. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it finished charging. This morning my phone charged to 100% and when I unplugged it the battery level instantly dropped to 82%. My brother called me also this morning and told me his phone did the same thing. Then he text me at lunch and told me his phone wouldn't charge past 96%.

Its weird because before these recent problems we've never had any problems with either of our batteries. Strange the problem would happen at the exact same time. Both have Op V's running backside cm7.

Yup, thats exactly the kind of thing re-calibrating solves. You both ought to do it. By the way, your custom theme is ready. Check the themes thread.

Calibrating will help smooth things out faster, but the way it works, it should smooth out on it's own after a few charge/discharge cycles.

I've posted this before, but no one ever seems to read it. Your battery will not show the true potential of ANY rom for the first few days after flashing. Give it at least three days before you make any conclusions.

I will incorporate this nugget of wisdom into any future advice I may give, thanks for the clarification. I'm sorry I hadn't read your previous postings on it, I've only really started following this forum maybe a month ago. Before that all I did was occasionally lurk nearby.

This is very bad for our type of batteries, it reduces their overall lifespan. There is a thread on the forums (nonroot) from a member who works in the battery industry.

Could you possibly link it? I'd love to read it. I'd hate to think I've been running around giving bad advice (although the senior members do a pretty good job of policing this, it isn't their responsibility).

No rechargeable battery should ever be drained below 10% to insure it's longevity. However, the phone doesn't ever take it below 3% (reqardless of what the battery meter says) as a precaution. Best bet for long battery life - never go below 20%.

I use an electric bicycle as my main means of transportation, so I've learned a bit about batteries over the past few years. ;)
