Root Newbie to rooting. be gentle :(

bugcola

Newbie
I recently got fed up with my college WiFi and think ill have better speeds over my phone network then fighting 300 students on one connection. Anyway some Google work and it led me here and i will say first from what i have read so far a lot of you are very kind and respectful to us newbies and i would like to say thank you first.

Now i have the HTC evo V 4g from virgin and want to get free hotspot and the guides i have looked at talked about unlocking this and that. Is all that necessary to unlock the wifi or is it needed for other options like ive noticed some nice widgets on the screenshot topic. Any finger to point me in the right direction and understanding the needs of some topics would be great and till then i will continue to look through the forums to maybe find my answer. Thanks for reading guys. hope to not be much of a bother new to phone rooting all together. :(

ight... so first... wrong section.. anything that has to do with rooting a device goes to the all things root section... keeps the forum a bit more organized so that the right people can help you...
but.. anyway... if wifi tethering is your only need... you will need to follow this guide... it should take you about two hours... if you get into any trouble... calm down and post your problem... its real hard to brick this phone...

Oops sorry everyone D: Thought i was correct but now i noticed its the forum section but not the rooting part again I apologize and thank you for moving it to the right section. im looking through the guide now and will come back if i run head first into a brick wall. no pun intended

im at the command prompt and have followed the guide to the T but for some reason when i try to enter the sdk-tool/ it keeps saying the path is incorrect

edit i derped forgot it was zipped

lol thanks when i build my new system im going with 8 , ok new issue device not found when trying to load the ada reboot bootloader

noticed i have not yet installed htc sync could that be why? also windows seems to fail to install a driver for the phone but i can access all the sd card files and debugging option

Win8 has been known to cause cancer, mostly due to it being complete garbage. KUBUNTU HOWEVER!.. :)

As far as device not found. 1) did u install HTC Sync for the drivers then uninstall HTC sync? 2) Reboot may be required 3) try a different USB port. I have 2 ports on my laptop and using adb/fastboot i often have to alternate its weird lol

1) no im installing now forgot about it and so after its fully installed remove it from my computer? ill reboot if it doesnt work after step one and then go onto step 3

Kubuntu? Really? KDE is terrible

Anyway. You know what I always did wrong with this?

Java. I ALWAYS forgot Java. ADB requires Java to run, and if you don't install it...well...it won't work sadly.

Also, HTC sync for drivers like stefen said. Then remove sync, as it blocks the debugging mode.

ok just finished sync so just delete the program and nothing more?

ok got into the reboot loader gonna continue thanks everyone! ill report back

RIght. Now HOPEFULLY adb will recognize your device. If not like I said, make sure you have java installed ;)

ok at the part where i have to select the shooter odex file but it doesnt say reboot after. just goes into a drop down menu that shows data/, meta-inf/, system/

figured it out

Unless you've installed a custom ROM that supports WiFi tether (different app, usually has a yellow icon), the tether that's on your phone now is the one from Virgin, and shouldn't work without you paying for it.

I suggest that you try Mobster HD. It's a favorite of mine.

Flash a rom that has 'WiFi tether'. It should be a yellow wifi signal icon. Open the app and clock on settings.

-Change Device Profile to Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)

-Scroll down and check "Enable routing fix"

EDIT: If your rom doesn't have it, simply open the play store and search "Wifi tether for root users" install it and continue doing what you do :P

The only rom I think I have installed is the one from the newbie guide. That mobster rom is pretty much what. Did befo but with its rom instead and with tethering don't you have to have a link between the two like a cable?

With the wifi tether app you don't need a cable. Just use it to turn hotspot on and off instead of the stock hotspot app. Probably have to go into settings and choose generic ics before you use it.

Just tried it out and works good thanks for the heads up guys on the app and will be checking out those other rooms like the mobster one it seems anyone else have some they liked?
