Root Newly Rooted - Thanks! Some basic q's...

Danke fur das r00t :)

Seriously, the guide was very helpful. I used HDev method for boot unlocker, decided not to worry about the water mark right now. I have a few basic questions, and I did read some of the similar type posts, but they were definitely older.

1.) Just to reiterate: no OTA updates, and no software updates? PRL and profile are ok?
2.) I have a 4GB SD card, but just ordered a 16 GB card. I've kind of halted before I downloaded too many apps or put too many other things on my phone/card. Is installing a new SD card going to mess anything up with my newly rooted phone? I'm using the MikG 3 ROM, and everything is stable. I just wanted to know if the SD card is like tied to the OS where if I simply pop it out, and pop in the new one, it's going to fart out on me.
3.) With uhm, legitimate apps, are they safe to update through the Market? Can I always update standard, basic "ok" apps even if my phone is rooted?
4.) Is there anything I should absolutely not do? I don't plan to start modding or deleting a ton of files or anything crazy. I just wanted to root to get a custom ROM and to run a few other apps.

Thanks guys, what a nice community of knowledgeable fellow nerds. I appreciate it!

Guten Tag! :D

No, dont accept any HTC software updates (Also known as OTA's).

PRL and profile updates are fine, as well as updating apps through the market.

You can install the 16gb SD card without problems. Just copy over the old files onto the new one and pop it in.

Once you get it all set up.... MAKE A NANDROID!! It'll save you if you accidentally do something stupid. :p

Correct

When you get new card, partition it, I'll link a guide for you sir:)

Yes, updates are fine, I do it all the time, and I rhyme!

Make sure you use sense kernels with sense roms.....aosp kernels with aosp roms...some other things probably but just read.

Thanks! Ok, so is there a way to make sure it's not set to auto-update? I went to the menu with all the profile/firmware updates, etc and I totally forgot if there's another menu. I'm terrified to select firmware, etc to make sure it's NOT selected, but wasn't sure if it was going to try and auto-update, haha. Pretty ridiculous.

As far as the SD card, is it as easy as formatting it and a simple select-all paste over? I will also do another Nandroid after the new SD card. Took me a while to figure out how to navigate to make a Nandroid backup from the sticky guide posted for rooting the 4G, but I figured it out after browsing around w/in Hboot.

Thank you again so much for the help.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I do have some questions from what you provided tho:

- What are the kernels for? What am I supposed to do with those?
- I already have Amon Ra, so I don't need another recovery, right?
- I take it you like Deck's ROM over Mik?

Still getting the hang of the terminology "recovery" also. When people refer to that, what are they referring to? So like when I loaded MikG's ROM, I remember entering a command through SDK like "fastbook recovery" and inserted the name of the ROM more or less. So is MikG technically my "recovery" or are people referring to a vanilla stock "recovery" in case you screw up. That's been a little unclear to me. Thanks!

I forgot to ask, if I want to flash to a new ROM and try something else out, does that mean all the data needs to be wiped, and I have to essentially start over from scratch since I'm guessing sounds/data and all that gets changed around? I've only tried Mik's, and I don't know if it's a giant pain in the you know what to try 4 or 5 ROMs before I want to stick with just one. If I have to keep synching contacts, data, etc, I'll go mad.

Custom roms such as Mik and Decks come with kernels.
I ran MikG for quite a while and loved it. Kernels...I should link you to a good explanation of these..check back to this post:)
Keep Amon Ra....very good recovery.
I am running decks now, an aosp rom, very smooth like Mik, which is a sense rom...I like it better tho for me...some phones act differently with roms but not much,
Kernels certainly act different on different phones.
Recovery is a separate, OS? for your phone, MikG, Decks, etc are different operating systems that you flash from recovery. Recovery is your best friend, you can fix alot from there.
It's just a different "section" on your phone.
I dont use adb or sdk much at all.
I'll get some informative links for ya:)

Edit: this link is very good and will answer alot of your questions

Yes when you wipe you essentially need to start from scratch. Titanium will back up apps and their data which helps immensely. Also I use sms backup and restore (free on play store) to back up texts. Titanium pro is not free but it's the best money a rooted user can spend.

If you use it to restore apps, don't restore any system apps which are in red font.

When you would like to flash another rom, make a nandroid backup.
Cliff notes on flashing roms basically, download rom to phone (sd card).
Boot (go) into recovery (Amon RA), select wipe and wipe everything EXCEPT SD CARD, I wipe 3 times to be safe. Yes you will lose everything except your sd card contents...flash rom...
Titanium Backup, which is a free/paid app in the Market is a good app to have to save your apps/data...The paid version is worth it..I recommend it :)
Just take it slow, ask questions (we dont mind) and have fun.
:)

There are 2 categories of custom roms. Those that have HTCs sense overlay so they will look similar to the stock Rom, or what are known as AOSP roms. Aosp stands for android open source platform(? I blanked on the p. I must be getting old) and they are pure android.

Aosp roms are barebones and good for people that like to customize things their way.

I preferred sense based roms for most of my rooted life until very recently.

Kernels...basically control how much power goes to the CPU. They do a lit of other things but custom kernels are ways for rooted users to increase performance and battery life. Aosp roms need aosp kernels, sense roms need sense kernels.

The recovery is amon ra. It is what you reboot into to make nandroid backups or flash New roms. As long as you can get to recovery, your device is not bricked and can be saved.

Typed this from the phone so if there are typos you gotta deal with it :p

Only thing for me to add it would seem is that you should make sure when you get the new card to format it with the phone. (Most Come Formatted) however the phone doesnt always play nice with outside formats. Not sure why but it seems that formatting the SDCARD with the phone is the best way to avoid an issue with the card later.
