Root next question after first root...battery

So, its been a week since my first root...very happy i did, very few issues, and i like my new user interface ??[M👍I (new) U(ser) I(nterface)]???

anyway..i am getting better battery life for sure than when i was unrooted, i can now leave my 3g radio on all day thru the hospital, push mail and twitter hourly, listen to TuneIn for 30min or so and make about an hour worth of calls and still have about 30-40% remaining after 12 hours....

is this what i can expect? or can i do better?

I have SetCPU but then remembered someone here saying not to use with an AOSP ROM...true???

i cannot find anything within MIUI that allows me to adjust any settings for clock/voltage etc...maybe i am missing it??

should i try a different Kernel?

see my sig below for what i am running now...

thanks in advance

Shanty, I would say that is what you can expect unless you do more drastic things like turning off you mobile network when not using it and stuff like that.

Sounds like you are doing well in that regard though.

I have to disagree, respectfully... If this is your first rom/kernel then I think you can do better with another rom/kernel. It's just a plain fact that all phones react differently, so keep flashin til you find something that works for you.

And if I'm not mistaken it is ok to use set cpu on ASOP.

Shanty, what kernel are you on? If you're not on Tiamat 3.3.7 with MIUI, I highly recommend you flash it and let it settle a few days, I got great battery life with that kernel with MIUI. (And a custom kernel will let you play with Setcpu, etc)

you can use setcpu with aosp but sometimes depending on your settings the two may conflict. it is easier to use the built in one. not sure on miui though. if it does not have a cpu scaling function then i would get setcpu to help scale your kernel so that you can get even better battery life. also what kernel are you using? have you tried the tiamat sbc kernels yet?

thanks, all ...

i am using Tiamat 4.1.0 (not sbc)
I think i will flash the 3.3.7 and see how that combo goes,

hmm, sbc is OK, really? that article by that Electrical engineer on xda got me nervous

will try to adjust things with setcpu, if things dont settle in again by mid week next week...

it has never been proven. i used sbc in the past with froyo and even on aosp roms and never had any issues. this is a great thread on the topic:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/319636-sbc-no-sbc-kernel.html

please read novox77 post#18

whenever i get a chance i would always use sbc.

before root, i used to walk around all day with my mobile(3g) radio turned off, my mail push set to manual, twitter app (plume) also set to manual, (i never use facebook s that has been always off)....turning on/off 3g just to check mail, surf, listen to tuneIn, got old, and i was always charging in the car to and from work..i felt tethered to a charge source...

so obviously by rooting i was hoping to get past that...

as above i have been getting much better battery life than before, being able to keep my phone "ON" and functioning for me, than me manually runnig it...

i just switched to tiamat 3.3.7sbc and we'll try that out, otherwise i will reflash my 4.1.0 nandoid

kernels usually take a few days to get settled in before you notice any change in battery life. after a few days if nothing has changed with battery then you can move on.

yep, noted..! thats why i gave my other combo a good week before inquiring on how well i was doing...

how is it a piece of software "needs to settle in" just curious how all this works ( i like to understand what i am doing)

well i can't explain it scientifically. but i think that as you go about your day you will encounter different variables that can have an impact on the battery. things like 3g signal strength as you travel about. you are probable going to use it differently on different days (ie not using the same app for the same amount of time). are you using 4g? if you give it enough time you should be able to see a difference on how the kernel handles all the day to day stuff. judging a kernel on one days use will not give you the big picture on how the kernel is running on your phone. you might be in a bad area that you might not always frequent and your 3g signal comes and goes and thus drain your battery more. the next day you can be an area where you use wifi all the time and thus saving battery life.

so you can see how it will be hard to judge a kernel on just one day. just because you battery drained really fast on the 1st day, does not mean that the kernel does not like your phone.

for me i still keep 3g off when i do not use it. by doing that i can get easily 2 days worth of use on my phone will moderate to heavy usage.

i hear ya, but i will just be happy if i can make it thru a day with everything on without worrying about plugging in once or twice before the day is out...its nice to know when i have new mail/tweets without "turning on and tuning in" as it were

on days where i know i will be out late and away from a charge source (say.. my vacations to Vegas) i will control my usage more with the radio toggle as i used to do before root...
