Help Nexus 5 - Black + White in menu???

Dorlingus

Lurker
Hi, very new to Android so forgive my stupidity, should it be the case! :-)

My GF has a Nexus 7 and doesn't see "Black + White" written above emergency call, on the lock screen. It's also written at the bottom of the pull down menu showing you what's going on in the background (I'm guessing). But I do. What is it? I don't want to see the words "Black + White" every time I pull the top menu down or look at my lock screen. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I've not heard of this before. My assumption would be that it's something you've done to the device as opposed to a system thing. Perhaps coming from an app or a theme??

Also, is your phone activated? The emergency call on the lock screen makes me think no, and perhaps it's related to a phone with no service?

Try booting the device into safe mode and see if it's still there. Safe mode temporarily disables all user apps for that session and will be a good indicator on whether or not it's coming from an app you've installed.

To enter safe mode hold the power button for a second to bring up the "power off" dialog. Then long press the power off dialog and it will ask you if you want to reboot into safe mode.

When finished with safe mode, simply restart the device.

Hi Brian, thanks for your post. I tried what you mentioned. The phone is activated and being used.

Unfortunately the "Black + White" message is still there in Safe Mode. The phone was new out of the box, yesterday. It is my work phone and therefore there has been third party applications installed to the device for work security, etc. It could be part of those third party applications, but I don't think so.

Here's a pic of what I see, if that helps?

Thanks for the picture. FYI, in case you didn't know, you can hold volume down + power at the same time to take a screenshot!

Maybe go to settings>apps>running and see if anything odd shows up there. I'll try some more google-fu and see if I can find anything. You are the first I've seen bring this up.

Also, is your device on KitKat or lollipop? In case it helps to know...

Did they do any setting up before giving it to you? Though I can't imagine why they would do anything like this (unless they went cheap and bought the phone second hand).

Like I said, it was new out of the box this week. I've installed some work related third party applications, but the message was there before i did that. I like everything clean and simple, and seeing this message is a bit like seeing dirt on your screen! Call me OCD, but i want it right! :)

You're not in New Zealand are you?

I was just thinking that it was appearing in the sort of place I'd expect the network name to be, only I'd never heard of a network called "Black + White". But I did a quick web search, and discovered that there is one by that name in New Zealand. So if the phone was connected to them that could be the explanation.

Nice sleuthing there Hadron!

Interestingly enough, my carrier doesn't display there on my Nexus 5. Not sure why the difference. Is it a regional thing?

I think youll need either a custom rom or Xposed Framework to change (or remove) the carrier name from lockscreen and notification shade mate (both require the device to be rooted)

I am rooted currently on 5.0.1 Lollipop but running stock from the factory images. My carrier information isn't displayed on the lockscreen or notification shade.

So maybe it's different on Lollipop? I can't say for sure. When I was on KK, I always ran a custom rom. I never had the phone stock until a couple weeks ago. So perhaps an update would take care of it, but I can't say for sure. If you're still on KK, is the phone bugging you to upgrade?

Edit:
Nevermind. My carrier displays in the upper left corner of the notifcation bar on my lockscreen. But that's the only time and place that it shows up. It isn't persistent in the notification shade.

Everyone is correct. That location above the emergency call button is where it shows pre-5, and in the top left is where it shows post-5. As far as I know, the only way that you can change or get rid of that is through rooting or modification of some kind.
