Help Nexus 6 User Setup Help (How do I do this? How to setup that?)

Wondering if the stock screen lock has a maximum number of attempts before it locks u out completely? Just curious....

i do believe there is a limit (10?) and either you are locked out completely or it puts you in time out for a certain number of minutes/hours.

if you have Microsoft outlook installed, the admin may have other permissions in place to limit the lock out.

searching the internet will yield you examples of this lock out "feature".

When I first got the Nexus 6 even when the phone was locked I could use voice commands to have it start playing music.

At some point this stopped working and instead the lock keypad pops up. If I unlock the phone then the music starts playing.

"Always On" is on as well as "Personal Results." This same issue takes place with setting a timer (timer won't set or begin countdown until AFTER I unlock the phone).

On the flip side, if I ask it to define something or search it can do it without unlocking.

Anyone else have this issue?

The only thing I can think of is recently installing Divide and using that as the default launcher. But even when I set Google as the default launcher this issue persists.

Does anyone know how to keep the screen awake while the Nexus 6 is charging? Some apps do that, but most do not. Here is my specific problem.

I went out for a country drive in my Porsche this afternoon. I plugged my N6 into a car charger and then popped it into a CD dock. Then I opened Google Maps (no, not Directions/Navigation). I simply wanted a real time map so I wouldn't get lost. However, Google Maps doesn't keep the screen on and it went to sleep after 30 seconds (my default). I realize that I can set the default up to 30 minutes, but it takes longer than that just to get out into the country.

Since the N6 is plugged in and charging while I drive, battery life is no issue. Any ideas on how to keep the screen awake?

Update: The problem has been solved. I found a simple toggle under Developer Options. Have a nice day! ☺

Another Update: It turns out that the toggle under Developer Options doesn't work. However, I found a free app in the PlayStore, Keep Screen On. It works fine, even with Lollipop 5.1.1.

In the old days there used to be an option to save to device which was simple and easy. Sad to see option to save to device gone.

This is a google experience device. Vanilla. They are in the business of cloud storage and everything needs to be attached to an account.

Other phones (htc) allow you to store to the sim card, so it's possible but on other flavors of Android and device brands, not on the nexus 6 from Google.

You can still save contacts to the phone. Just disable contacts sync. Then save contacts to the Google account normally. They will not be uploaded and stay on the phone and only on the phone.

How can you tell how many photos you have saved on your nexus device? I was trying to count them and I counted around 3,020 before my device had an issue, I saw somewhere I had 9,182 saved in Google photos, I read somewhere a 64 GB phone can save over an estimate 16k in photos, videos

I use Quick Pic and the opening page has the quantity in the lower left of the folders. IE........in the bluetooth folder it says I have 212 pics etc.

It's all relative. Assuming you are using the default settings of full resolution (4160 x 3120 pix, or 13 MP) and saving as JPEG then the resulting images would be ~2.5 MB each. Also assuming you don't have your phone loaded with other media like your entire music library or several feature length films, on the 64 GB model you could have up to 50 GB of free data storage, which would put the total number of images in the neighborhood of 20k.

Hi,
I just got my nexus 6 today. Project fi setup and all is well.
Have been using android since G1 and have never not been able to figure out a setting until now...
My phone is pattern locked, and somehow, even locked i still can pull down the settings tab: wifi,bt,airplane mode, etc. My question is how do i remove this access? When my phone is locked, i don't want anything acceSsible. Not even notifications if possible.
Thanks

Does the N6 have the "always listening" and active display notifications like the Moto X and the Droid Maxx? I've been looking around and can't seem to find any info on that.

No it doesn't. I miss that from my Maxx. I've asked at XDA for someone to port the X to the Nexus but no one has.

It does have an always listening. Here is a screenshot.

It doesnt haven't active notifications, it instead has "ambient display" that will turn the screen on when say taking the phone out of your pocket. I personally disabled this and hacked in the tap to wake feature. Love it. When i say hack, its just an app to install and you must be rooted.

the n6 does have "ok google" at the ready. the ambient screen works just fine in my world. rarely i keep the screen off but when i do, and notifications come in, the screen comes to life showing me these notifications.

works well for me. YMMV....

I've been doing ok bud! Good to see you.

Of course any time phone upgrade time rolls around is good. Seriously, this time I have never been more undecided with less than a month to go. I watched the Moto press conference this morning. And while I think the Moto X Style looks like it will be an awesome phone... I'm still really drawn to the Nexus 6. That big beautiful 6" screen is calling me. And it's a Nexus.

You know where my problem comes from? About a month ago I bought a buddy's Nexus 7 2012 WiFi. I love it. I'm hooked on the nice big screen. But it's showing its age. If there was a Nexus 7 2015 in the works, I'd be giving serious consideration to going all data and dropping my phone line completely.

But there isn't. There are some nice 8" tabs coming but that's a load to carry around.

Maybe VZW will still have something to throw into the ring. If they do something similar with the previous Moto X and the Droid Maxx... same internals with a bigger screen, I'd probably be doing that. But that remains to be seen.

I'd rather go with the Moto X Style than the Note 5. And the LG G4 Pro isn't until Q4 and I hate to wait.

And even still, the N6 rules them all in the size department.

Well, I ordered my N6. After much deliberation I finally pulled the trigger. Now I just have to wait until it comes in! Ugh.

I might be a little late to the party, but at least I'm here finally.

My beloved Nexus 5, died on me Friday so I picked up the nexus 6. So far I like the phone only 2 small issues. I can't get OK Google to do anything without unlocking the phone. On my nexus 5 I didn't have this problem. Also the other issue is sometimes when I'm making a phone call and remove the phone from my face the screen doesn't turn back on it just stays off till the other person hangs up. Thanks in advance.
