Help Nexus Galaxy : Upgrade

Some time ago I posted that I wanted to move from my iPhone 4S to an android phone to experience android. Well I picked up an unlocked galaxy Nexus and it is running 4.04. This is a nice piece of hardware. I really like the OS as well. What I can't figure out is how to move to the latest OS Jelly Bean (4.1). I have done lots of reading but still have questions.
1) Can I update the phone if there isn't a SIM in it?
I do have access to WIFI but when I go to check for updates I get nothing. Waiting for a MicroSim to Sim adapter to come in so I can plug my iPhone sim in this phone.
2) Are updates for the Nexus phones independent from the Carrier or does it work through the carrier.
I suppose if it is through the carrier this could be my problem. They may have not released it (Rogers Canada)

Thanks

There are different variants of the Galaxy Nexus even among the GSM version. There is a version that is directly updated via google, and then there are carrier tied versions. If you want to be on the cutting edge of updates, you'll need to flash your phone to the Google direct variant. Search for threads regarding "yakju" to find out how to flash yours.

Checked under the battery and the Model: GT-I98250M. I'll have to do some research. I don't know anything about rooting a phone.

Rogers, I believe, is using a Canadian variation of the stock Android software build that is updated by Samsung and the carrier, not by Google. They way you can tell this is by going into Maps, going into Settings>About, then look under "Device". If it is listed as "yakju" (or samsung yakju), it is the version updated directly by Google. But, my guess, you have the Canadian version (likely yakjuux) instead.

You can follow these instructions to put the "yakju" version on your phone. Once you are done, you will have the official Google version of Jellybean for the Nexus (yakju 4.1.1) and will receive future updates when Google releases them.
