No 4g In Phoenix Az? Really? and not coming anytime soon

So after seeing the east valley blob of green centered around the guadalupe and country club drive area, I had to go and see if it was really there or not. And after 25 min of driving around, i did not at any point have 4g... I made sure profile and prl was up to date and all that........................ is there something I should be doing to have 4g? I would like to confirm this actually being there, and after driving all around the suspected area, I found nothing.

Any ideas?

Not sure, are you sure you have your phone in 4G mode and the antenna is not just in standby mode? I have tested the area of 4G coverage in north Phoenix and it worked great (fast data and strong signal) each time. This is obviously the initial build out of Sprints 4G network in Phoenix and is probably in testing phase, so maybe it was not on at the time you were there. ...hard to say.

Well I double checked everything and will take a run there again another time. I didn't even think about testing outages and whatnot. I will update when I go over there again, it would be nice to have confermation of it really being there :)

Another thing, when I turn my 4g on it will start acanning for about 5 seconds, say 4g is disconnected, and then scan again right after saying its disconnected as if I just turned it on. Is this normal or could my device be malfunctioning?

I live a half-mile from Country Club and Guadalupe. No 4G. However, I have seen a couple of posts on other forums of guys saying they got 4G on the 60 near Country Club. I tried it today driving home from work. I kept scanning every 1/4 mile. As I was entering the exit ramp for Country Club, which is the highest point around that area (don't know if that matters, just thought I would mention it), it finally locked on to 4G. The phone said "Connecting to Sprint" and then something like "Verifying IP address" and then the little 3G icon turned to 4G. Sadly it went back to 3G about 5 seconds later. Grrrrrr. Frustrating! I've read that the Clear tower is at Extension and Guadalupe. If I stood on my roof I could see the tower. And still NO 4G! What's up Sprint? Get with the program already!

I have a 4G confirmation from a buddy that lives in the Awahtukee area. He was out near Alma School & QueenCreek Rd and got the 4G notification. He drove back home and said the 4G signal is still on. We tried a Fring video call with me on wifi and him on 4G. Worked great. I have yet to get speedtest numbers from this test.

i just got back from the country club and southern area and had the same thing happen! i was sitting inside the cafe at bookmans and i was like "hell yeah!" but then it didnt fully connect, and then everyone looked at me like i was crazy

soooo close sprint! just go that extra mile and flip the switch already!

I agree... i know its out and about in Phoenix, just need to flip the switch! I live in the north valley and it always works fast and great!

False alarm on my previous post. The 4G symbol that my friend saw was the new 4G notification in the upper left corner which is the notification that the antenna is turned on. Apparently with version 3.70 (HTC evo). This was recently changed. The 4G settings area in "wireless & networks" is also different from 3.29 or 3.30. It now shows "Tap to Scan for 4G service". The video test must have been very good 3G and got lucky with the newest bandwidth adjusting version of Fring.

I experimented today and drove out to Greenway Rd in North Phoenix. GeJohnO in earlier post on Dec 16th was absolutely correct. I kept hitting the tap to scan and got Sprint service and an IP address with a weak signal near 16th st. I drove a little further west and the signal had 3 bars. Ran speedtest and got over 4mb down and 1.5 up. :) Drove away eastbound and no 4G:(

I was also testing at Guadalupe and Arizona ave (Country Club dr.) and got the "connecting to Sprint" once or twice but it kept disconnecting. Never got an IP address.

I was at the corner of Southern and Mesa Drive on the 7th. I was able to get a 4G connection on my EVO. Speedtest results were: 5.59 down, 2.26 up.

I was just over their to check out the speeds, and I was still unable to connect... do I need to be on the stock 2.1 up to date over the air, or am I able to be on a custom rom and be able to connect fine? I just want to be able to connect and at least see where my $10 a month is going... lol!

I am running stock 2.2 software number 3.70.651.1.

I turned on the 4G Antenna then taped to scan for 4G services. It connected to the Sprint network and the 3g indicator on the notification bar changed to 4G.

Okay, I am currently running the TruelyEpic 1.2 EXT4 ac version, if you have an interest I highly reccomend it, it is... truely epic! Lol!

I'm going to take another drive around later today, I'm hella determined to connect to put my $10 to use XD

where is the rest of the valley getting flocking turned on? Lol

Could be tomorrow, could be a year from now. Phoenix isnt on the current/future list for 4G so the only conclusion is that Sprint has no real immediate plans to launch citywide.

Wonder what is going to happen February 7th though. Sprint says something big. wonder if its WiMax related.

Maybe they are going to try and play smart to keep customers and stop charging people who don't live in 4g covered areas the freakin $10 a month! Now THAT would be pretty big... or maybe that and they are going to credit back everyone that has been paying that for no reason...

OR MAYBE EVEN BETTER... somehow epic users will FINALLY get the ota froyo update from a parralel universe where sprint actually... works?

Sorry I'm livng in a fantasy world with those thoughts...

Hello all. I noticed on clear's coverage map for the phoenix area, there is a huge coverage area showing in the east valley between Country Club and Lindsey & Brown and Southern. Can anybody verify if this coverage area is allowing them to get service?

Specifically, I live near Lindsey and Broadway. Not a Sprint customer yet but maybe soon. Verizon is just too pricey. Plus, I like the phones that Sprint currently offers.

I just checked out th coverage map, and the mesa gree blob is new, but what happened to the chandler gilbert mesa blob that was farther south? Any clue as to wtf is goin on with that? I wil be going to the new area to see if it is too good to be true or not...

Good catch. The green "blob" definately moved, slightly north, if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully this means that things are still progressing in Phoenix for 4G service. Perhapse they are testing various sites individually. At this point, I think any change is good, since it at least means something is going on with the 4G network in Phoneix.

I tested 4G today around 5:00 PM at the corner of broadway & Horne in Mesa and was able to connect. Highest download speed I got was 7.7Mb down, didn't pay attention to the upload speed. EVO 4G.

Thanks for the update. I am very close to that location. I appear to be right on the edge of the green blob, but I'm hoping it'll expand by the middle of next month when I moved to Sprint.

Well, unless they are doing random testing and don't keep the 4g up and running. That would piss me off. I'd like to get an answer on this issue, if anybody has the inside scope from Clear.

I got 11.2Mbps down! I didn't pay attention to up speeds either.. but 11Mbps down?? If only th blob would move to the west a bit...

Yeah, well I live near the other blob in the north valley, but I'm still out luck that I'm not covered. Hopefuly they are getting closer to turn on the service in the whole city, it's overdue alredy. I was expecting that it would be a December surprise but nothing.
