No Android in my future

For Google to sync with desktop outlook (it already sync's with Exchange) it would need to license ActiveSync from MS which, apparently they would rather not do. Rather, they'd prefer all syncing was done through gmail and Google's cloud services. If USB desktop outlook sync is your key feature, then your options are limited as even WP7 doesn't do this. WP7 requires you to connect your desktop outlook to a live.com account and sync through their cloud services, much like Google.

You'd probably be best off with the iPhone.

Um... Ok... good for you???

You bothered to sign up just to tell us this very vital piece of news?

As an owner of 4 iPods, 2 of which have died thanks to non-user replaceable battery, and iPod Touch (32GB), iPhone 2G, iPhone 3GS, I wish you the best of luck with the Steve Jobs line of products.... Me, I'll love and enjoy my Androids over the crappy iOS platform, along with all of the other very lucky Android users here.

No more iOS products for me, EVER, unless it's given to me for free. I'm done with that crap.

One of the best moments of my life was when I stopped using Outlook! I've spent way too much time wrestling that @#$% program and the @#$% sync software that works with it. A prime example of over complication.

So your getting windows phone 7?? well windows phone 7 is not really much tech its just easy to navigate u cant do much with it anymore. Android is the best route and i dont see why u wouldnt get one and u can use google to sync stuff up

I just wrote a paper for college called Why You Should Choose Android Over Apple. OP would you like to read it? It clearly states why Android is far better than Steve Jobs, Apple, and the iPhone.

Actually, I'd like to read it.

HTC phones, like my Evo, sync to Outlook (contacts and calendars, not sure about notes). I did it once just to see if it works (I use gMail for all of my contacts now) and it worked very well indeed.

I have an iPad too. Make sure your sync worked completely :) Some note fields in Contacts get truncated, which was quite a surprise to me, and not a pleasant one.

I would drop the money for a third party app, but the reviews from users are mixed, some singing accolades and other cursing them as useless.
User reviews will also ways be mixed because many who write such reviews cannot write objectively. You had to learn to read between the lines and determine what the facts are versus the opinions. Home | syncdroid.net - because Androids need a good Outlook sync lists a number of Outlook sync options for Android.

Um, no. ActiveSync is for Exchange sync. Not Outlook sync.

The app is actually called touchdown, not lookout. lol. She claims it works well.
Touchdown is an Exchange client. It does not sync with Outlook.

"Better" is always subjective.

Your paper clearly states "why you think Android is far better than Steve Jobs, Apple, and the iPhone". This isn't a one-size-fits-all world. There are those for whom the iPhone is a better fit.

...and I hope you realize that comparing Android to Steve Jobs isn't an appropriate comparison. :D

Way to make a new member feel welcome....

The lack (perceived or otherwise) of Outlook sync is obviously important to the OP. Instead of coming on all self-righteous, defensive and/or downright rude, some constructive guidance would be much more welcoming. Who knows, it might even bring about a conversion to the Android family.

I never used Outlook. I'm helping people to fix their computer problems from 10 years, and now i'm a programmer and web developer, but i never used Outlook. And i'm very happy.

Things are very simple on Android, sync with google mail, manage my contacts online, from every computer and that is enough. Why i need a 300$ Outlook licence just to make the things worse ?

Um, no. ActiveSync is for Exchange sync. Not Outlook sync.

Um, yes. There are actually two (if not more) iterations of ActiveSync. One is Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) used for exchange to connect and push data to external clients as you state. The other is to connect mobile devices to the desktop client, such as WM 6.x to Outlook (unsupported in WP7). These are separate licenses and I suspect Google only had the Exchange license, hence no desktop sync support.

my thoughts exactly.

Both HTC and Samsung Android devices provides Outlook support, (Not sure about other manufacturer's phones).

I've got an bulit-in E-mail client on my SGS that can sync to Outlook perfectly.

I agree, however, I also agree that the OP was a little rude about how they came in here. They didn't ask anyone any questions (unless they did it by private message, but it seems as though they didn't) and just signed up to state that they already bought an iPad and wasn't going to get an Android. I just don't see the point. If you have a question, ask it. I can confirm that the people on this forum are awesome. I've asked some pretty basic questions in my time here and no one's given me a hard time about it. Everyone is very nice and helpful so to join, without asking for any help or asking the question you have and just say "I'm not getting an Android" is a little... mean? That's not the word I'm looking for but I don't know what is. I just think the OP was unnecessary  If they had joined, asked questions about syncing what they need and still found that Android wasn't for them it would be a completely different story.

Not trying to be rude to anyone, especially OP. I think you'll find you'll be very welcome in the forum if you browse around a bit =)

Well to me probably the first question I would ask is what e-mail address are you using with outlook? Is this a work e-mail address or a personal e-mail address. Because you may need to sync just the e-mail program and not your contacts.

I disagree- we've all seen the trolls that come on and say that android sucks, its a 2nd rate copy of the iPhone, iPhone blah, blah, blah. He stated his problem, did the research here and didn't find a solution that fit his needs and told people about his situation.

This is the problem with the android community- if you don't come here 100% committed to android, wishing that jobs would just die already, and not willing to suicide bomb apple's campus, you're a idiot apple fanboy.

Back to the topic...

Sure, wait for the iPhone, but I'd also keep an eye on android's next update gingerbread, don't know much about bb, but I'd look into them and windows 7 too. Get what works and what you like. If you don't like android, that's fine.

That's a bit harsh ... and incorrect, among other things.

My suggestion that the iPhone might be the OP's best option was an earnest assessment of the description of the situation.

The problem is that Android does not natively sync with desktop Outlook via a USB tether. He did not want to sync through cloud services so he has several options such as WM 6.x, iPhone, Blackberry (not sure about Symbian).

Wow, I feel like I have been cut to pieces, skewered, roasted and hung out to dry. My post may have appeared to be rude, but it was not my intention. I was only expressing my opinion as to the lack of a feature that is important to me. I don

And while my post may have come off as complaining, I was only venting my frustration since I really would like to own an android.

Actually, the original post came off as an incredulous flounce ... at least to me.

Congrats for doing all the research and discovering that Android doesn't fulfill your needs at this time before you committed (financially, at least) to the platform. And, I agree that finding a needed feature missing in any device that otherwise is feature rich, is disappointing and frustrating.

The question remains that after all your research and evaluation did you decide to make your first and only post to the forum to proclaim Android's (known) deficiency and announce you will be not purchasing an Android device?

Chalk up the snarky posts to overzealous immaturity. You will find that in any public forum, but this one is usally a bit less than others. It's like buying a plane ticket and riding coach ... you always risk getting stuck next to the 350 lb. hygienically challenged traveler.
