No market purchases? No youtube?

Spent about a day wwith the 101 so far getting everything how i llike, and havw come across a couple quirks...

The keyboard on this thing is pretty rough. Is possible to replace it the same way we do on our phones? I did a quick try with the Dx keyboard but didn't have luck

I have the Google apps installed, but the market only lists a few purchases from my account. When I search for the missing apps, they don't appear in the market at all.

Also the YouTube app doesn't work at all. Is this a known issue?? Between this and the lousy flash pwformance (for now), how are people getting their YouTube action??

"Better Keyboard" is on the archos appslib market. If you only have the google market, try downloading "SwiftKey".

The kickstand is great for when i'm browsing while laying it on the table, but i really can't touchtype without tactile feedback (i.e. the ridges around physical keys). When i actually type something long, i turn it into portrait and type faster on that. The keys are big and square so it's rather easy to type that way.

As for Youtube, i got mine to work by manually deleting it and installing the one from the market.

Go to Google Market and install "android terminal emulator"

Enter this:

cd /data/test/froyo/system/app
rm YouTube.apk

Back out of the terminal and reboot


Have you installed the v5 version of the market? Maybe they've fixed the youtube by then?

I reset, installed v5 and got YouTube going. Still dont see all my purchases, even after clearing the market and Google framework cache and all that, but I was able to find the important ones so thats not a huge deal.

Still need to mess with keyboards. Do any of the replacement options take more screen space? My biggest beef with stock is itsit'stoo damn small.

Define "worth it".

I have the Archos 70 8GB model, which is basically the same as the 101 but is a 7" tablet instead of a 10" tablet.

Been playing with it for about 4-5 days now and overall, I'm impressed with it considering the price tag of $279.99. The Galaxy S is probably a better tablet but will set you back $599.99 (maybe you will find them for less...but still considerably more expensive).

Most apps work fine on the 70 but because there are no "dedicated" capacitive buttons on the 70 and the 101 (they are actually on the screen itself), it causes some issues with certain apps, widgets, etc. but it is more of an annoyance than an actual problem.

Battery life is pretty good. It is in standby most of the day at work but I pick it up and play with it from time to time. I have been on it a lot more during the night and can play with it for about 4-5 hours until it reaches 20-25% battery life. I was showing it off at work today and I'm at 71% battery (8 hours off the charger) Not bad IMO.

Overall, I think it is a good choice if you are looking for a larger device to do most of the day to day functions like email, web, videos, gaming, etc. You do have to install a work-a-round to get the actual Android Market and Google apps (Gmail, Gtalk, etc.) but once you do, it feels much more complete.

I would not buy a Galaxy Tab, iPad, or even the Honeycomb Motorola Tablet (coming soon) because of the price tag that come with those devices. Having a Android powered phone takes the "necessity" out of having a tablet...but they are enjoyable devices to use and I love having it in conjunction with my laptop and phone. I just wish you could charge it via USB!

Sounds pretty bomb imo, but the thing is, is it 279.99 with a 2 year contract? and from my development standpoint, is it going to be worth it to save up the extra couple hundred and grab the 10 inch instead since it's currently one of the largest? AT&T I believe has the Galaxy for like 399.99 with a 2 year contract, which is only like 30/m, so thats not that bad. I'm just wondering whats going to be more worth it, because 3 in difference is huge you know what I mean?

No, the Archos is not sold with any kind of contract. There is no spot for a sim card and there is no CDMA radio so you cannot activate this on any mobile carrier...WiFi only.

The Galaxy Tab may be $399.99 with a 2 year contract but you have to pay $30 per month as well. If you need a tablet with more than wifi, it will cost you. At least with the Verizon version of the Galaxy Tab, you buy it for full retail and then you can activate it on a month by month basis and it will still always work on WiFi.

I have a Samsung Fascinate and I can tether my internet connection to my tablet if needed so I don't have a need for a 3G or 4G tablet that will cost me extra.

If you want a 10" tablet, the Archos 101 is only $299.99 for the 8GB version (only $20 more than the 7" version). So the question really is...What form factor do you want? 10" is too big for me but the 7" is perfect (but that's just me).

I don't think the development would be any different on a 7" tablet vs. a 10" tablet. But...I'm not a dev so I can't say for sure.
