No more space on phone and considering Palm

I'm sure the answer has been posted around here before but is there an app that will show exactly what is using the internal storage and how much of it?

Obviously, Settings > Applications > Manage Apps will do this but I'm just curious if it is showing it accurately.

Most of my apps are on sd so forcing apps to sd isn't really a necessity. Plus, I'm always clearing caches but I am down to between 15 - 20mb. The biggest app according to Manage Apps is Maps (at just over 8mb), and then following are LP, Poweramp, Folder Organizer, Y! Mail and GMail. The rest that are still on the phone storage are relatively small, imo.

I've had clearouts of un-used apps but most of these seem to be from sd anyway so I don't gain much more space.

I'm not whinging (much) but am just curious of a way to see exactly what is taking up my space.

Are you deleting your cache? Within manage applications quite a few apps store cache which takes up a fair bit of space. Can take a while to go through them but once you do it a few times you get used to which ones take up the most.

Another reason to root. 1 click cache cleaning :D

Got over 80 apps on my phone and about 95mb of space left :)

When I stopped obsessing about my battery life and 'force stopping' all non-essential apps constantly...I started obsessing about clearing caches! :p When I hit about 15mb, I clear caches and get back up to about 20.

I don't want to root just yet as 1) I don't understand it completely and 2) I'm still on contract so don't want to void the warranty.

I'm just wondering if I'm missing something that I can clear house that I'm not seeing on the Manage Apps.

Try this app, comes in handy!

Quick App Clean Cache - Android app on AppBrain

I have 39 apps if you count street view and flash and i have 36 mb left, all aps that can be moved have been moved and i dont store emails or texts on my phone once i have read them, all cache is clear, im using stock rom.

Plus you have to keep 25 mb free anyway to update the os when its released ota, i dont think its a massive problem now but if you want to play games that are like ios games it soon will be, for this device anyway, it was a bit short sighted of htc considering how cheap memmory is.

In the last week I've been having the exact same problem as the original poster.

I did searches and found a few threads which offer solutions. My mail app only syncs the last 3 days worth of emails. My texts are limited to 50 texts per thread and there are 34 threads, most of which have less than 20 texts in. I have cleared the cache of the browser and anything else I could find.

I don't have a huge amount of apps and all of them that allow me are moved to SD, also I did the SDK trick and moved everything else apart from those that stop working.

Here's what I have on the SD:

Google earth
Rock player
Gallery (as in Cooliris)
AppInventorPhoneApp
Angry Birds
Goggles
Astro
Layar
Dropbox
Shopper
Movies
My Tracks
Zedge
HTC Sync
GTasks
Bluetooth File Transfer
Wikidroid
Blow Up
Barcode Scanner
Google Translate
SMS Backup
Tapatalk Pro
Google Sky Map
PicSay
XE
Concise Oxford Dictionary
System Panel Lite
Compass
Battery Graph
App 2 SD
Chrome to Phone

And these are the ones on the phone:

Maps 10.13MB
Twitter 8.99MB
Facebook 6.24
Gmail 3.74
Voice Search 2.51MB
Sky News 2.34
Street View 1.62
YouTube 1.32
SayMyName 596KB
MyPlayer 456KB
Auto Rotate Widget 60KB

Total of all the apps on the phone is 38MB

Right now I have 21.82MB of space!

The only suspicion I have is that the Gallery app has accrued a huge cache of photos downloaded from Picasa. BUT the cache shows as 0.00B in the app info, however when I open an album that contains almost 1000 photos it loads up quite fast so I think there's another cache somewhere. However I tried uninstalling the Gallery and it made no difference so I'm now stuck.

Anyone got any ideas?? 11 apps is not a lot!

Err any ideas anyone? I'm now down to 18.48 with no extra apps installed.

I've just done a check on my phone - I have 39 downloaded apps and I moved all the ones that could be moved to SD card (not rooted or using any special moving tool, just the ones that will move on their own), this leaves me with 66.57MB of internal space. Bearing in mind that only about half of apps refuse to move to the card, I reckon I have room to install loads and loads and loads more apps. If I ever run out of space I'm 100% sure there will be some unused apps I could uninstall.

I really don't see an issue TBH.

Well I'm glad you're sorted mate.

Some of the main apps that fill up storage:

Contacts Storage - If you are signed in to the Facebook Online Directory (not the same as signing in to the Facebook app) then details and profile info is downloaded and cached in Contacts Storage. My 30+ Google contacts take up about 2mb in Contacts Storage; when I signed in to the online directory it added data for 800+ facebook gaming friends and the cache increased to over 60mb.

Email - deleting an email from your phone DOES NOT delete the email from your phone. It moves it to the Trash folder for that email account. To fully delete the mail and recover the memory it's using you need to delete the messages in the Trash folder every now and then.

Twitter Clients - my Tweetdeck app is only young and is still being developed. One issue is that the cache for Tweetdeck increases in size over time and can become several mb in a couple of weeks. Manage Applications > Tweetdeck > Clear cache solves the problem until they improve the self-limiting of cache size.

LauncherPro & other launcher replacements - these apps NEED to store data because you customize your homescreens. The data can be anything up to 20mb although the app is only about 2-3mb. Nothing you can do unless you have fresh start and clear the stored data.

My contacts storage is only 18.21MB

I don't delete emails from there phone I just let the phone sync each day and older emails automatically disappear. I did try deleting the account but it made no difference.

I use the official Twitter app and it has nothing in the cache to clear.

I don't use one.

Thanks for the suggestions though mate.

Thumbnails etc are cached on SD card.

I have found the cache on the SD but I don't see any photos in there which I find a bit strange

But how many apps do you use on a weekly basis?

Browser and defrost set up. That's it.

Mainly because I spend my time here answering questions or modifying my.handset.
Unfortunately its modified.as much as possible now so more apps will be used.

Apps like cab4me come in handy. Not weekly but if you need it, its there. I used to back up with astro and restore if needed. Not ideal. It's a work around for poor internalmemory.

Now I have loads of space. Ill never use it all up. No more getting by. my.phone is perfect. I don't have one problem now.

Damn! I have 40 apps and have 92MB left!

Do you really want to play?

I have 80 apps and 236MB free. And that's just internal. 683MB on ext too.

I feel like a child now though :(

But maybe you don't feel so smug ;)

"Williams guide" which is really stubake13's guide reworded is flawed. Also even William isn't using it
