Hi
I have owned a virgin optimus v for several months. It is a great phone. I found out about the Quick Settings (wifi hotspot) free app and I have been using it for a while. I know it probably makes virgin mad I use so much data. Anyway, last week I had some issues with my phone turning off and on by itself and also a few times it froze for a couple minutes. It wasn't a big deal but I called customer service up and they said they would mail me a new(actually it was refurbished) phone in a couple days and I have to mail back my glitched phone. That was easy! I didn't have to beg for one? So I get my new phone activated and start re installing all the games and apps use. I go to toggle on my wifi hotspot in the quick settings and it wont turn on. You can actually see the 3g symbol disappear as I push it on. It says "no network". So i look into the dozens of other wifi hotspot apps and they all do the same thing. The phone automatically turns off 3g data as I try to turn on wifi hotspot. This must be a virgin update to stop me from using wifi hotspot settings.

I look at the menu under "phone info" on my NEWER phone says.....
-android version 2.2.2
-sw version vm670z5

older phone that works with wifi hotspot says...
-android version 2.2.1
-sw version vm670z4

Can anyone help me? Do you know an app that will work with the new version. Is there anything in the settings I can do to get wifi hotspot back please???

-thanks

The hotspot was disabled in 2.2.2 because Virgin Mobile does not support it on the Beyond Talk plan (it is against your TOS). They offer the service through Broadband2go with a Mifi device.

is there anyway I can get an older version downloaded (2.2.1) so I can use wifi hotspot again? Or any other way I can get wifi hotspot on 2.2.2 ?

No, you're supposed to pay for the service. If you circumvent that, it's theft of services.

Careful of what you ask for here on the forums... mods will lock these types of threads if it breaks the forum rules.

oh really? I thought i paid for unlimited data plan. I guess I'll have to read the fine print again from virgin mobile.

I just got an app called pda-net version 3.02 it works well with usb port. It is actually faster speed than Quick Setting app. I guess that pda-net app is theft of service also.
:(

BTW when a company says "unlimited data" I think that company should be accused of theft of my monthly payment.

Read the Grey booklet that came with your phone entitled "Terms of Service". Go to "SPECIFIC TERMS AND RESTRICTIONS REGARDING DATA SERVICES",(line 3) You may not use the data sevice .................

wow. I just read that section. If I root my phone is that against terms of service? I can't find that info anywhere.

Also, dont you think it's funny the emotion on the picture of the guys face in the middle of the VM TOS booklet. He is like,..."what the heck, I had NO idea" and he is covering his eyes as he looks at his phone! Interesting photo to put in the terms of service...LOL!

How can they hold you to compliance with a term of service when you don't get it in writing until after the purchase.

You are free to return the phone and go with a carrier that supports hotspot service. Verizon does for an additional $20/month, but it is not unlimited.

They have defined what they mean by unlimited data, and your accepting their service is accepting their terms.

Rooting your phone voids your warranty which is provided by LG not Virgin Mobile.
Look in the LG Optimus "V" "Basic Guide" Book. Page 134 LIMITED WARRANTY STATEMENT: SECTION 2.WHAT THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER. Item(2)

I too have the opyimus v 2.2.2. the only way i found to easily circumvent update, is to root using gingerbreak and install wifi tether. very simple. even a caveman can do it

Or just don't upgrade. I did root, but still on 2.2.1. I don't use tethering, but plan to once I get a tablet. Sure seems if I buy an unlimited data plan, and the phone has built in software that enables tethering, it shouldn't be "illegal". I never read the manual, and never visited this site, so I don't know any better... but then I only plan on using tethering to check email, so I don't think I'm going to crash the VM network (VM does a good job at that on its own). :D

it still works for me, but im running gingerbread. if you root and install any v2.3 or better rom it should work again. otherwise i think there are a few apps that you can still tether with on your v2.2 but youll need to tether via usb.

I was just saying that probably 90% of the users of phones probably don't read the fine print. It took me 10 minutes to find "TOS" here: Virgin Mobile USA

The way this is written, it almost sounds like you can't connect wirelessly to a computer via an explorer like File Expert. I always just "assumed" (yes, ignorant) that if I was on an unlimited plan, and there was an app that made that phone tether, it was perfectly legal. Now if you had to root to do it, then yes I can see it's not right... or if the phone wouldn't allow it.

Like I said I've never tethered my phone, but I have an icon on it that's called "Wifi Hotspot"... I'd rather have a 2gb limit with tethering, than unlimited... and I don't even have another device to tether to.

It was also enclosed with your device at the time of purchase.

Even with the initial shipment of the Optimus Vs with 2.2.1 the option was hidden from the menu. VM has a tethering plan and device. It is not offered through their BeyondTalk plan.

The phone doesn't out of the box.

I can put an icon on my phone called "Rob A Bank" that doesn't make it legal.

All you "theft of service people" are complete losers. Firstly, I missed the bit where it said this forum was about discussing the legality of certain practises and contract law, which none of you are experts on anyway, as you are NOT lawyers.

Secondly, why do you think information is available online? So that people can make their OWN decisions. If someone decides to use certain information illegally, that is of THEIR concern and NOT yours.

I've just had to wade 75% of the forum of these off-topic comments. It is NOT illegal to discuss how electronic devices can be fitted together and neither is discussing how to root/tether/etc. That is called KNOWLEDGE. How people act on such knowledge is up to THEM and they don't need you trying to brainwash them into following your perspective on the world.

You Americans are always trying to tell people how to live their lives. Just let them get on with it! If you feel uncomfortable around the topics, then don't contribute! For all you Yanks go on about being so free in your democracy, you do nothing but spout on incessantly about what you can NOT do and what others should not do. Get a life!

Yep, nada/nothing/nop except all of the other ways everyone else has described.

Great advice, opie. Sometimes it's better to say nothing at all than to speak falsehoods or one's own personal convictions:

‎"Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies." -Nietzsche

In any discussion it's best to see all sides of a topic, is it not. That way you can make a choice based on your conscience. If you didn't notice the first time, go back over my posts, the info I gave came right out of the "Terms Of Service"Booklet.

I suggest that you take it up with the owner of Android Forums, as it's up to him what is or isn't permissible on his site. Discussion of circumventing network TOS is one of those things.

its not thief if you only use it when your main internet is down. :P

I agree, if you don't abuse it watching video, I don't feel like I'm stealing anything. I have an OV and a SGP5 in front of me. I can check my email with either, so I'm going to use the same amount of data either way. So to be easier on my eyes, I press my hotspot button, check my mail with my Galaxy Player, and then turn off hotspot (less than 5 minutes). No matter what the TOS says, that can't be "wrong". I'm guessing there's fine print in almost everything you buy that contains things you're "disobeying" every day. My goal is not to get something for nothing, just make the best use of what I have (that I am paying for).
