Help No name search while dialing

Just got the phone today, and to my surprise, there isn't the option to dial "Gary" using the keypad (4-2-7-9 on the keypad) anymore? I have to press the search button, type his name, then be given the option what I want to do with that contact?

This can't be right.... Am I missing something?
Is there an app that enables this by any chance?

This has always been the case for stock Android. You'll have to install a third party dialer if you really want that feature (or flash a custom ROM that has it in the future).

It's also a feature of the Blur dialer, but as said above, it's never been part of vanilla Android.

GO Contacts offers this. AOSP Android's Contacts app never had this feature. I've always just used the Search button to start dialing.

I was equally disappointed when I left sense. Fortunately go contacts has this feature. Bummer they haven't added this to stock android. That and the nice scrollable date selector are probably the only things I miss from sense. It is tedious without them.

Yeah, a let down for me too. I had put DialerOne on a friend's phone for this reason - can we replace the dialer button at the bottom of the home screen with a shortcut? What about incoming calls?

Okay, yes, you can park DialerOne as the dialer at the bottom of the screen. Same as you'd move any other icon around.

However:

You can't set it as the default dialer from, say, the contacts list. Doesn't come up as a dialing option.

You'd think that they would borrow the "Just Type" function from WebOS since they are already borrowing a lot of other things!
