Non android question

I know this is an android forum, but I have a non android question.

Is there a way to mod a older flip phone so that it can not make any calls? It is for a mentally handicapped child to use as a toy/music player. (They love phones)

Can be software or hardware mod.

If no can an android phone be modded in this way (remove phone call access) even phones with plans can make calls to customer support and 911. A call to 911 that is not an emergency (ie this kid pushing buttons and playing) is not good as it makes the 911 services dispatch someone when it is not needed.


I ask this here because I can not find an answer and there are modders here.

That would do the trick with any GSM (AT&T or t-mobile) phone.

Actually any phone that does not have an active mobile contract with a carrier should be able to be used as a toy and not be able to make calls.

Excellent point. I know some old flips could definitely not do this.

If the thread author could post the make and model I don't think it would be hard to find out.

If it's for a child, no. Kids are nosy and love to push buttons, icons, whatever. They'd accidentally find a way to turn airplane mode off just by being curious. Some older flip phones like our 6085 don't have airplane mode.

Another question.

If I root an android and remove the dialer, would that work? Only real way to test it would be to call 911 so I am hopping someone already knows if it will disable the phone calls.

If you do achieve root and either disable or remove the dialer/contacts, it would be safe to say then no calls could be made or received.
