Non rooters

I just got my phone so till I'm confident I want to keep it I don't want to root it. Is there a forum here for non-rooters or is it OK to post here?

Why does one want to root their phone anyway? What does it do for you, what are the disadvantages, if any?

Thanks

P.S. is there any way to stop the VM "NOISE" when the phone boots other than putting it in silent mode?

I downloaded Silent Boot off of the market and it's worked well for me.

And I've had my Triumph since July and still haven't rooted it. I've read what the advantages are and can't see that they would help me. As I've said on many threads, my Triumph has worked perfectly from day one and has done everything it's supposed to do. Rooting it didn't seem like it would make a difference for me.
But you should check the threads on what rooting will do for the Triumph and come to your own decision. Many people swear by it, rooting and going to a version of CM7, so see how your phone compares to what is upgraded through rooting.
You can always root in later if you find it would work better that way.

Rooting & installing custom ROMs on the triumph is pretty safe, you can always backup and go back to stock (but most likely you won't once you do it). Installing CM7 is even better, only problem now is HDMI doesn't work and wifi & bluetooth can't be used at the same time. Some of the usual advantages of root is being able to use it as wifi hotspot, or getting upgraded Gingerbread Android or even Ice Cream Sandwich soon. VM likely won't be updating the Triumph.

Oh BTW, you need root to be able to remove that annoying VM bootup animation & sound.

Yeah and rooting allows you to get rid of bloatware... You know, the VM garbage apps you never use.

online videos are sooooo good. It's like "color by numbers" really. But if you're cool with your situation, cool.

I would like to get rid of the useless junk VM installs on the phone but that would not be a good enough reason for me to root. I'll just have to study what others are saying and why they find rooting useful.

So far I like the Triumph but am a little disappointed at the GPS performance. It is a lot slower (A LOT) to connect than my optimus. And for the most part will not connect at all inside. Again my Optimus had no problem in the local mall and that is an issue with apps like Shopkick, the Triumph will not find any sats. at all in the mall. But I can live without shopkick as long as GPS nav works and it seems to work OK as you are mostly outside when you want to navigate with the GPS.

P.S. Would be nice if the damn battery cover would stay on.

If you have a case the battery cover won't fall off! :p It is annoying when it happens though.

I like being rooted and using CM7 for the total customization I have at my fingertips. There are some useful apps that require root as well. I personally feel that the 2.3 ROMs (MIUI & CM7) are much better than stock. Especially if you use the GPS, as it works better with those ROMs (it may not do much for you inside a building though).

I just like that I can do what I want with my phone and not have some carrier tell me that I can't do something because they don't like it (as long as I am following the ToS)! Rooting can void your warranty, but it does not break ToS. Many times people that have had hardware issues after rooting can still get a replacement from VM (just don't lie to them!). The theme chooser in CM7 and the options to theme in MIUI are both excellent, and I would hate to not have that option.

This phone is extremely hard to mess up. If you do, there is usually a fix for it, and I have not seen a verifiable case of someone totally bricking their phone. It's not as scary as it can be made out to be.

All that being said, there is nothing wrong with staying stock. Do what you think is best for you and how you use your phone.

On this phone it is seriously so hard to permanently mess it up other than physical damage. With the intercept all you had to do is flash a bootlogo that was too large and it was a paper weight, but with this phone, it is seriously hard to do. I mean even messing up the partition that has the recovery and main boot files can be restored. As long as either download mode or recovery mod works you can save yourself.

Rooting this phone is very easy, and it can provide you with a whole new level of customization. Like with CM7, there are endless themes available as with MIUI, plus those ROMS use the Gingerbread base os 2.3.7, which is better than froyo 2.2.2 which is what ours ships with. Also rooting provides you with access to apps I deem essential such as TitaniumBackup, RootExplorer, SetCPU, and many others. These can manage your app data, and SetCPU is handy even on the stock ROM to help with power management.

How hard is it to revert your phone back to factory defaults after it has been rooted?

There are a couple different ways. Check out the stickied root guide in the all things root section. It has links to some guides telling you how to do that.

you can still use swype, go to their website and they can send you an installation apk for swype.
