Root Noob Here Needing Major Help! Unrooting and Rooting

Okay, so I have rooted my Droid eris several times and have downloaded and installed kaosfroyo, vanilla, and plain Jane. I have reverted back to the "stock" Rom with this program on the computer. I have clockwork mod on this because i have seen this name in the text while it installed. So now I think I'm on the stock but I'm not fully sure. I want to unroot this phone completely and make it back to how it was when you would open up a brand new box. Then i was to go through and install the, in your opinion, the best rom out there. Now for the probem, when I go to install a new Rom, I turn off the phone completely, hold down volume down and end buttons, then when the menu comes up I push up on the volume button and i get the picture of an Eris with a red triangle and an exclamation point. That disables me from doing anything. It does the same thing when I turn the phone off and hold volume up with the end button. To fix it, I just turn off the phone and let it boot up normal. Is there any fix for this? Please keep in mind that i am a super dummy when it comes to this stuff so I don't fully understand the technical terms and would appreciate explanations.

Thank you so much for your time and help.

It sure sounds as if you are unrooted, or at the very least the Clockwork custom recovery - which you were using to install custom ROMs - has been removed and replaced with the stock Eris recovery, which does not allow you to install custom ROMs.

If you use the 1-click root application procedure, it should install Amon's Recovery - generally considered safer for the Eris than Clockwork, by the way, though that may be hooey - and then you can reinstall any ROM that you wish.

Just note that if you want to switch to a different ROM, you don't have to unroot and re-root - just use Recovery, do a data wipe, and flash the ROM over what you already have.

It looks like you got the same answer at xda: Noob Here Needing Major Help! Unrooting and Rooting - xda-developers

Follow the instructions in this thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html

to re-root your phone and go through the steps to install a custom ROM. As for custom ROMs, if you prefer the Sense launcher as comes with the Eris, I recommend xtrSENSE - it has the same look and feel, but gives you plenty of extra space for apps and data and runs extremely well.

[ROM][GPL][11/5/2010] xtrSENSE4.6.5 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

Follow the link in the thread above to download xtrSENSE 4.6.5. Copy the xtrSENSE4.6.5.zip file that you download (the full zip file - do not unzip it first) to your SD card on the phone. The steps in the Universal Root for Dummies thread will walk you through installing a custom ROM.

That is exactly what i was looking for. i just used the ruu verizon program to get 'Image Version 2.36.605.1' and now im going to follow the root thread sent me. thank you. now say i want to switch from xtrSENSE to Vanilla; do i have to reuse the ruu verizon program and reroot?

There is no reason to go to the ruu verizon program between each ROM. Once your phone is rooted you can jump from ROM to ROM all you'd like.
The occasional nand backup between ROMs might be a good idea, but only if you think you'll want to go back to the ROM you're leaving. If you do the nand makes that very easy.

Blake,

Looks like you've accidentally posted in the Eris root forum...maybe Hoto could move your post to the Evo forum?

Cheers!

Nope, sorry. I can move an entire thread, but not just one message out of a thread.
Blake, you want to be here EVO 4G - All Things Root - Android Forums

lol, Hoto! I thought you were "SuperGuide" :D (time for a raise/promotion, perhaps? ;))

I only suggested this because I thought I've seen Mods move posts...didn't know if this was available to Guides or not (or if I'm really wrong about what super powers the Mods have too).

Cheers, mate!

Superguide? Me?? Naw, I'm just some guy with a green tint (Hoto takes another, closer, look at Scary...). Those red folks, they're like gods around here. :)
