Root NOOB Just Rooted!

Tonight I thought that I'd take the plunge and ROOT my Desire using Unrevoked 3... worked like a dream almost, but I got there!

I've now done a Titanium Backup and Nandroid backup using ClockworkMod Recovery..

Just got a message "No sd-ext. skipping backup of sd-ext"

So... is my phone now safe?

and what next??
 
sd ext is apartition on your sd card that you need to create yourself, read Danfrance's (member of this forum) FAQ.

Your phone is OK.
 
The nandroid is fine, it just means you don't have an EXT partition on the SD card so it ignores that part of the backup. You're good to go!!

You'll need an EXT partition for a lot of ROMs so read the A2SD+ thread for more information and then look into a custom ROM :D
 
So the backup I made with Rom Manager / ClockworkMod recovery is the same as a Gold card or Nandroid backup???

I guess It would be better to get a bigger SD card before partitioning (currently got a 4Gb) would probably get a 16Gb class 4 (maybe?)) and partition it with ROM manager, then copy my existing card across to the FAT partition.

What would be a good ROM to start off with? currently running LP+ over Sense with Beautiful Widgets.....

You can partition with rom manager but I'd recommend against it really.

My preferred recommendation is Gparted Live cd. Yes its more hassle but it does it perfectly every time.

In regards to ROMs, although its subjective... If you are not using sense, Cyanogen or a Cyanogen based rom (probably DeFroST) are good. Although, you also will have to use Android contacts instead of people and Android email instead if the HTC one.
 
It seems then that as I use K9 for my e-mail & handcent for my SMS that the only different app that I'd have to use is Android contacts (does this sync with my contacts in Gmail?)

I'm having a bit of a problem with all the acronyms at the moment and what different things do (eg Goldcard) so if anyone has a link to a definitions page that would be appreciated..

Should I make a Goldcard as a matter of course?

The only thing I can say is that you need a Goldcard if you want to use Chrome to Phone app. I am sure someone more able than myself can explain why.

Android comes with standard Contacts (yes it syncs its google ;), calendar, dialer.

Personally i find the above better anyway.

A goldcard hides the CID of your phone. When flashing an official rom (not custom) it looks for the CID (Carrier ID) to check it is valid for the rom. Your CID is t-mobile so without a goldcard you can only flash tmob roms.

Flashing custom roms does not need it, but sometimes you can "break" your phone and only an official rom will fix it (called an RUU - Rom Upgrade Utility). Its best to have a goldcard to widen your choices for recovery should you need it.

it is advisable
you can make your day to day card a gold card so you know you already have it with you
its advisable though to also make a spare if you have a spare card just incase of card death (make sure you create a new image and dont load the other gold cards image onto the spare card as they are unique to each)
 
Just looking at my SD card and noticed that I have a file called update.zip in root

Do I need this file?
Will it cause a problem when burning a Rom?

I think its to do with my nandroid backup, I do have a recovery-update.zip file in clockwork folder
 
It sounds like you use rom manager. This is the clockworkmod available with rom manager (not to be confused with clockworkmod recovery flashed via unrevoked).

IMO, you shouldnt use rom manager and just do things manually anyway, so no, you dont need it. Info in the rooting FAQ should you need.
 
Just got a new SD card today (16Gb class 4), partitioned it with Gparted (1Gb ext3 partition - 0 Gb swap) and created a gold card on it.
Before doing that I copied the contents of my 4Gb card to my PC and I'm now in the process of copying it to my 16Gb card.

When that's done I'm going to make a new Nandroid backup and I'm thinking of putting the DeFrost ROM on it....(tomorrow)

Just tried to download defrost and its giving me several options...

New radio
and 2 different kernels.... CFS & BFS

Which do I download?

Radio isn't needed so long as yo're on a FroYo radio
Kernel-wise:

BFS = Brain **** Scheduler

BFS (Brain **** Scheduler) is the new kid on the block. It was written in 2007 after the author became annoyed with the random stalls experienced while using a Linux-based desktop machine. The scheduler is designed to offer low latency when used interactively, for example on a desktop machine, or a phone!

CFS = Completely Fair Scheduler

CFS (Completely Fair Scheduler) is the default scheduler in the majority of distributions, however it isn’t though to be great. I won’t go into the details, however being relatively old it has built up quite a lot of bulk and the algorithms used are rather complicated.

I find BFS more responsive, but it works fine with the default kernel (which is a CFS, SVS one). You can try different ones and see which work best for you (as with any mod, do a nandroid before updating).

Downloading DeFroST as we speak, not going to install radio or kernel yet.

Did a nandroid this morning, so ive something to drop back to if I don't like it.
