Root Noob question whether to root or not

Newbie
Hi, I just got a galaxy sII that is a month old. I made a trade for it so I don't have a receipt so I'm sure I can't use the warranty.

There are several apps which I would like to have that require rooting.
I can't afford to replace it and I'm worried I'll mess the phone up.

I'm good with computers but not cell phones. I've read about the nightmares
people have had trying to upgrade to ICS which I won't do.

I guess my question (finally) is rooting usually successful or is it a nightmare
like the ICS upgrade?

I know there is some risk but if I messed it up can I do a factory restore?
Thanks for any replies. I love this phone. I had been using a tiny tracphone. :)

Well, I think I am going to go for it. I'm "computer savvy" but clueless on cells.
There is too many things I want to do that require rooting.

Can anyone suggest the best tutorial to follow for the Galaxy SII.

Thanks a bunch.

Also many people turn in the easy process of rooting by not following the directions as long as you follow them you will be ok and it will be easy.

I do advise though read the tutorial or watch the video before you do anything.

Thanks for helping me. The phones model is Samsung SGH 1727

Android version 2.3.6

Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to read it all first.
Can you direct me to a good tutorial. I sure would appreciate it. :)

Thanks for the help. I looked at a bunch of tuts but none of them looked as thorough as this one. Thanks again. I'm going to take my time.

Update: I figured I would try a whole bunch of apps before I root it so I can see the few I want to keep.

As soon as I'm done playing I will root it.

One question: if I use superuser+su files to flash clockworkmod with the phones basic functions work like wifi.

If im correct your asking is wifi, bluetooth, and all that will still work?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, that's what I was wondering. I imagine it will get rid of the att bloatware that I can't uninstall now. I was just wondering if the WiFi, Bluetooth would work. I read somewhere about having to hack WiFi to get it to work. Mine worked straight from a factory reset without any hacks.

Will getting root and cwm and su don t do nothing than give you control. So doing all that wont debloat or make all that not work. Now if you debloat and uninstall a wifi/bluetooth ect. File that will disable it.
If you are going to debloat or flash a custom rom or kernal or anything make sure you back up the stock setting in case you reach a road block and have to go back to stock

Thanks Atmazzz

You're welcome. :)

And like djedgarftw said, when you get rooted and ClockworkMod installed, go to recovery and make a backup. It makes life so much easier if you ever make a mistake and need to restore a working rom.

Will do Atmazzz. Thanks.

I started to root the phone and odin recognizes it. However, when I hit pda
and start to browse for the cwm file zonealarm pops up and says odin3 is
recognized as a keylogger. I got odin from the tutorial at
[MOD] ROOT | CWM | ODIN | SGH-I727 and SGH-I727R Skyrocket - xda-developers

I'm thinking it is a false positive and it's safe. I tried downloading odin from
another site but the new one doesn't recognize my phone for some reason??

My gut says it's not a keylogger but I'm not sure. Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks,
Tom

Woohoo I'm rooted. djedgarftw thanks for guiding me through it and for your help too Atmazzz. I did remember to do the backup before rooting with superuser. I still want to mess around with some apps. If by chance my phone gets slow can I use the reset via settings>privacy>factory reset or should I use odin and go with the backup I made?

Thanks for all the help again.

Tom

It shouldn't slow down but in the case that it does I would make a backup of the rooted system so you won't have to start all over. Also if you do changes and you like them and want to stick with them I would back it up as well

I'm looking into getting a no contract straight talk unlimited plan for $45. I need the sim card and it is asking if my phone is

  • AT&T Compatible Phone (which it is)
  • Unlocked GSM Phone (Phone must operate in 850 and 1900 MHz bands)(which it is)
It's an att phone that is unlocked. I just want to make sure I order the right sim
card. I think its the unlocked gsm one on 850 and 1900 MHz that I need.

Also just to double check does the sgh i727 have a Mini Sim card or Micro Sim card.
http://www.straighttalk.com/shopsims if you check unlocked you'll see the two cards.
I can't tell by looking and my google searches keep talking about the sd card not
the sim card. One of those frustrating google search nights.

Also if anyone is happy with there no contract service feel free to chime in.

Thanks for the knowledge,
Tom

AT&T compatible is what you want since the skyrocket is AT&T it will not need to be unlocked. It is regular sim not the micro also.

I am trying it out also and i can say i like it i am a data hog and they did slow me down but i still get good speeds if you dont use more then 2gb you will get good speeds. They use AT&T towers so you will get the signal an AT&T user gets which all depends in your area.

Good deal....I'll order the regular sim.

I am a bit confused though. When I flashed the att phone with superuser does that unlock it? Should I still go with the att version or the unlocked GSM version.?

  • Unlocked GSM Phone (Phone must operate in 850 and 1900 MHz bands)
  • AT&T Compatible Phone (Since the unlock is it still an att phone)
These are my options. I feel like I have an At&t phone that is unlocked so both opt's look like they meet my criteria. Sorry for the over cautious questions...just want to get the right one to save the hassle.

I'm going to owe you a case of beer after all this. Ice cold, or your favorite beverage.

THANKS YET AGAIN!!!
