noob questions regarding my SGN

I love my samsung galaxy nexus. MY last phone, an iphone, doesnt even come close to this phone!
But i do have few questions. I am with Rogers and basically went with their 500MB data plan. I however, can use wifi at my place and have the mobile data switch to off. Anytime i download anything is it still going to use up my data from my data plan of 500MB? I have wifi at home so thought why note just use my wifi instead of rogers server.
Second question, how do you actually close an app? I usaully just touch the right bottom part of the phone and then move whatever is running to the left. Is that okay, or is my data still being used and i have to close it some other way?
And my final question is, i dont want facebook or any other application to ever make updates or send updates or find info about me and post em online lol. Is there a way to stop that?
Sorry i have a lot of questions, ive learned a lot using those utube tutorial videos but still had these three questions that i was unsure about.
Thanks guys!

if your are on a wifi network it will use that rather than mobile network so your data allowance should be ok

You can check your usage in settings mine seems pretty accurate
As i side not while in data usage screen you can set your apps to use and update via wifi only

You dont need to close apps as such android monitors and closes apps as it see fit you can go it to apps and force close if you wish

I dont use facebook so i cant help on that one sorry

Firstly - I would suggest you turn WiFi on, either permanently ore as soon as you step through your front door. Once you connect to any WiFi Android will remember the network and connect to it automatically, unless you determine that it should "forget" a particular connection (in WiFi settings) and then you will be asked again if you wish to connect to it. Once your device connects to a WiFi network everything the device syncs or updates will happen over the WiFi connection, even if you still have your data connection on. Therefore, there is no need to disconnect your mobile data connection at all (well, unless you are abroad and then you probably want to avoid sending/receiving data unless someone else pays for it :D).
As far as Facebook is concerened, although I do not use it myself I suspect that it would ask you whether or not to sync data or not. If for whatever reason that is not the case or you missed to respond accordingly upon installation, then I believe you can still manipulate the sync settings by going to >settings >Accounts & sync - where facebook should be able to disable syncing from there, although this might also stop syncing any facebook messages :o. The reason I assume this is that syncing of Skype and Twitter, which is what I use, can be controlled from here.

As malcster noted, you don't need to 'close apps' typically. Android manages running apps and will close any that it deems necessary. Otherwise they will just sit 'sleeping' in the background. The only time you'd want to 'close an app' is when it is something that may run in the background - like a streaming music app. But I think that is pretty obvious if you don't want to hear music playing constantly! Very few apps have 'close' or 'exit' buttons even in the menu, but if they do you can use them. I think my Sirius app has an exit button for one example.
