Root Noob root + Miui rom success!

Hi, I don't post much but have been lurking in these forums for a while. I hope my small contribution can help someone. I want to say a big thank you for everyone's extremely helpful advice in these forums. This is a great community in terms of learning, and helping each other!

I developed a dislike for HTC's sense, it's never really worked for me, and it was this factor that spurred me on to root. I finally decided to root and install the MIUI XJ 1.3.18 Final rom for 2.2 Froyo, having no previous experience at all.

Well...I approached with some trepidation, and I have to say was constantly nervous throughout the operation!

I read a huge amount before starting, and I took what I believe was the easiest route for me.

(Before rooting may I strongly suggest you read the All About RootingThread thoroughly.)

Step 1 C A R E F U L L Y follow this video with written instructions step by step. (take your time) How To Gain S-Off, Flash a Custom Recovery, and Root Your Android Phone Using the Revolutionary Method. There is a link to the Revolutionary tool there. It makes everything a breeze, and I think the guys who made this are geniuses!

Step 2 was to download Titanium backup from the android market, and make a backup.

When everything was backed up and rooted I then used a card reader connected to my pc and partitioned my new 16g micro sdhc using Mini Tool Partition (P.s As I do not want to give you any bad advice and so blow up your beloved Desire, I now insert this bit of advice from Rastaman-FB;3277185. If you wish to respond to his post you will find it in the thread below #8)

Just noticed this, very big no no for a few reasons

this tool is poor and in most cases doesnt correctly format the data, align the partitions and from a technical and personal experience it messes up the card.

do not use this and use gparted either via vmware, bootable cd or usb or linux distro

minitool is the bane of evil

This will format and wipe everything off your disk so make sure you've backed up everything! The order of partitions is important.

1.Primary- fat 32 - The rest
2.Primary- ext 3 - 1 GB
3.Primary- linux-swap - around 100 MB

I read up all the info I could find on my chosen rom and got the download links from Here.

I then followed this Link and again carefully followed the steps in the video to load the MIUI XJ 1.3.18 Final rom.

After everything was installed and the new rom working on my phone I downloaded Android Terminal Emulator app from the market, because you have to manually activate A2SD+ with this rom.

You activate by running these commands in Android Terminal Emulator

su
a2sd zipalign
cachesd

(A problem I encountered when typing su was that I received the message SU - permissions denied. I found the solution by trawling the web. My keyboard was typing SU in caps, which was difficult for me to see. It has to be in lowercase for it to work!)

You may have to do a2sd+ reinstall. I had to go through this procedure to reinstall A2SD+:

Run these commands in Android Terminal Emulator:

su
system/bin/a2sd check
system/bin/a2sd reinstall (will reboot the phone)

Run this command in Android Terminal Emulator;
su
system/bin/a2sd cachesd (will reboot the phone again)

You now have A2SD+ enabled!

Well...I'm loving the speed and freedom, the phone has improved by leaps and bounds, and I'm feeling a little chuffed with myself that I didn't blow the phone up!

Cheers!

Congratulations!
Glad you enjoy your new unlocked Desire!
One question though.
How did you do a titanium backup before you rooted? Unless that method allows a temp root before hand.

You're right of course..Titanium backup was after root, my mistake!

Now updated to Miui XJ 1.9.30 and all I can say is,

If you're tired of your phone and you've never rooted, I encourage you to root and try this rom.

I have a brand new, smooth as silk phone!

Im in need of a change, ive just backed up!
Is this Miui worth a shout? or do i just go back to cyan (new) or the like.....
Been ages since i changed, help me out guys LOL

Look at rom videos and try anything you like the look of.

Ive tried many roms, looked at many videos......
Would like a first hand account?!?!
If thats too much too ask here, then why are you replying?
Once down off your high.horse,, what is a good ROM to install after being on cyan for months???
Anyone

Don't be an arse! Now everyone will flock and help you. Well done!

Now you're going to have to research on your own, just what you were trying to avoid. My heart bleeds for you.

Night735..
Was no need for that.

It is generally a better idea to look at videos yourself or do your own research.
Reason being choosing ROM is completely personal.

Now, I suggest you stop having a tantrum.

I hear the CalmDown mod is pretty good

Why is this still in standard Desire section?

See, that's why we need experienced folk to help guide the misguided.

I knew no better, honestly, it worked for me, but I will this instant uninstall this blot to Android Forums!!!

yeah no worries, if you know no better then you will use it.

myself and SUroot are experienced with this tool and its nothing but dirt.

I noticed today that my signature can take more characters (maybe its the ROM developer thing) so I put what I had in my XDA sig here ;)

Will this procedure give me "space" on my device? I am getting tired of the low on space notification. And this looks pretty straight forward. Do I HAVE to put a custom rom on?
Cheers in advance

Cheer. I have tried following the video. Got to the part where I start the command prompt and the prompt flashes up for a second and then vanishes. Running windows 7. Not sure if that has anything to do with it?

I'm running windows 7 and had no problems. Make sure you've followed their instructions to the letter.
