Help! I've been reading up on how to root my SGS2 which seems quite straight forward apart form the huge number of kernel versions out there. My aim is to get root so I can run the sixaxis controller software. I was then hoping to put the original kernel back on so I just have root and no nasty yellow exclamation mark.

My kernel version shows as
2.6.35.7-I9100BVKJ4-CL681297root@DELL123#2

which insecure version should I use, can I replace it with the original version after I get root and if so, does anyone have a link to it please?

Just that please :/
and a pony...

Your probably on KJ4, but check your Build Number version in "About Phone" first, then root with the associated cf-root kernel version.

but if your into flashing, It might be an idea to flash KK5 firmware on before rooting, then root with KK5 cf-root. (flashing "official" firmware will mean you lose root, so do this before rooting)

There's no KJ4 version, but KJ3 from here will work fine.

Complete instructions for removing the warning can be found here. The stock XWKJ3 kernel can be downloaded from here (second-from last on the page) and will do the job.

Sorry, I'm all out of ponies. :)

Yes, the build number is GINGERBREAD.BVKJ4

I'm not really into flashing, I need the official Orange ROM for their UMA app which I use a lot at home (no 3G signal) so really all I'm after is root with everything else stock. It seems that Chainfire doesn't have a version for KJ4, if I install KK5 will I change any of the apps already installed on the phone?

Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it.

In that case don't replace the existing firmware, just root as per my post. Everything will remain as-is, except that you'll have ClockworkMod Recovery (available via HOME + VOL_UP + POWER), the CWM app, and of course root access.

OK, so I flash with CF KJ3 and then reflash with the original KJ3 to remove the warning and everything should be hunky dory? I'll move back a version from KJ4 but that shouldn't matter?

I realise I'm being a total '**** over this so I apologise.

1 Flash the CF-Root kernel with Odin to gain root.
2 Flash the stock kernel with Odin to remove warning.
3 Flash the CF-Root zImage with the CWM app to regain full root without warning returning.
