whatsup guys im new to the whole droid x scene, and was just wondering what the advantages/disadvantages to overclocking and running say liberty were.... thanks in advance

Overclocking is simple.

Faster clock speeds = faster phone.

However, faster clock speeds also typically result in less stability, and the increased voltage necessary to generate those faster clock speeds can lead to increased heat, power consumption, and shorter component life.

Running custom ROMs just provide you different feature sets for your phone. Different ROMs provide different options. There's not a specific advantage, it's all dependent on which ROM you select.

Running liberty will make your phone quicker, at the expense of losing so of the blur you may like, some can be reinstalled and work but not all.

Overclocking can be unstable but some people can run at 1.45 ghz and are stable while others are only stable at 1.1. I am currently at 1.2 ghz using less battery than stock. It takes a lot of playing with to get it dialed in.

just a quick sideways hijacking, ;) isn't most of the blur in the motorola widgets? I know that it's part of the messaging and contacts too, but thats typically replaced with aosp in the ROMs, but i never used any of the motorola widgets anyways and i've never missed anything when i switch ROMs.

about overclocking, i'm at 1.2 lv and it makes my battery last longer. I don't worry too much about overheating tho cause i have a profile set up to drop it back to stock settings when it hits 106 degrees.

typically if i noticed its getting real hot, like from running pandora on a 1x signal, i'll shut the programs down and lay the phone on one of my cool lab benches and the temp will drop pretty quickly.

Well blur consist of more than widgets. I'm on Liberty and the only thing I miss is the blur dialer, not sure if I can put it on my phone and get it running correctly, and if its possible I don't know if it would slow down the phone

the dialer is ok on liberty, i really liked the dialer on apex (which i guess is just the new gingerbread dialer) but i think the thing i probably use the least on my phone is the dialer. so far the only thing i don't really like about it is i can't do one touch dialing it seems.

The dialer on ApeX is just the stock Motorola (Blur) dialer for 2.2.1. The one in Liberty/GummyJAR is the new gingerbread dialer.

I like the features of it but don't like that it's slower, so in the end I prefer the GummyJAR/Liberty gingerbread dialer.

so I guess my next ? is are there pros and cons to running liberty... and is it possible to get just the liberty theme I am falling in love with the black and yellow, always been two of my favorite color combo's.. thanks in advance

The pros are that it was developed by two of the best DroidX developers around, its very fast and stable, its ASOP with the option to install some blur( i love the blur camera) loads and loads of options in the toolbox and Rootkit script.

The cons are that your no longer running the stock motoblur
OH WAIT! thats not a con =]

probably sound ******ed but what's asop? and since its really stable is there a. step by step for noobs on how to do it.... only reason im hesitant is because I just got my x and don't wanna risk bricking it

aosp stands for Android Open Source Project and it pretty much means that the source code to develope on android is open and available ...open platform,,,heres some more info that may be useful for you
Welcome to Android | Android Open Source

and this is not something you would usually screw around with without and developing or programming experience:)
