Root Noob

I am/was a loyal Iphone jailbreaker. I just rooted my EVO 4. Aside from free tethering, what advantages does rooting do? Is there anything like Cydia or Installous for Android, so you can "test" the apps for free? Any good suggestions for a replacement SMS or email app? Any way of deleting any of the Sprint Bloatware I will nedver use?

Thanks

Hopefully "was" is the current status for your Iphone loyalty! ;)

Besides being able to make almost any change you want to your phone(with the right reading and knowledge for some things), there are root only apps like Wifi Tether. There is a list of sprint bloat you can freeze and/or delete using Titanium Backup(another root only app). By "test" apps are you referring to using paid apps for free? Most apps have trial versions you can use to decide if you want the paid app, but the devs work hard to bring us good apps so getting them for free is stealing if that is what you were referring to. If not, my apologies. As far as an SMS app, I use Handcent. Very good app and never any issues.

There are a ton of custom roms out that have the sprint bloat removed and most are themed have some extras included.

If you haven't already done it, I would read through the Rooting for Dummies guide stickied at the top of the forum

You can actually load roms that are "ported" from other handsets and developed to run on the EVO. We have roms from the HTC desire hd, the EVO shift, you name it, its probably been done.
The roms I'm currently running have sense 2.0, and sense 3.0 on them. They were never originally made to run on the EVO, but they've been developed by a group of very talented people to work, and work awesomely might I add. :D

Well, with android you don't really need cydia, because you can load apps (.apk files) from the sd card. That also defeats the purpose for Installous. Though, I would not try to 'test' android apps. Our developers are needed to keep android viable.

or you can try miui rom which is way to iphony for me. lol
LOL, that was my main complaint as well. It had a lot of nice features though (the built in firewall comes to mind). And I love the fact that if android wants to, it can be an iphone.
