Okay so I just recently rooted my evo 4g using revolutionary. Now I'm trying to figure out what are roms and what do they do for your phone. Also how would I find them and install them on my phone.

each rom has it's own thread with detailed information as to what is included, excluded and mod's if there are any... it's a good place to start... IMO
I'm a noob as well and just rooted my EVO 4G for the first time yesterday but maybe I can help you a bit. First I loaded CM7 and was underwhelmed. The phone was definitely quick but thats because it was missing all the visual goodies contained in sense. If your looking for the pure Android experience CM7 is good but Android alone is not a visually appealing operating system. Then I loaded MikG 2.45 which has a blend of Sense 2.1 and 3.0 (full blown 3.0 is too much for our "out of date" devices) and WOW. First off you don't realize how sense makes everything on the screen look sharper and clearer until you do without it for a while. I'm loving the added 3.0 sense goodies not included in the stock ROM, like lock screen weather, a numeric battery meter and different skins. If you want to keep the visual, I would highly recommend the MikG rom. I may get bored and try some of the other popular roms but for now I am very impressed. Just a tip, get titanium backup, because when you switch roms you can use it to restore all your apps.
one thing that i like to point out is that there are plenty of pure sense 3.0 and most of them is really good. the best one though is mik3d which i'm addicted to right now. best rom period. it is in beta but it really should be a final (r1). check it out.

One question. Does mik3d come with kernel. If it doesn't which would be best to download.
So I tried the ROM cm7.. I didn't like it much. I liked the sense factor a lot more. Plus when I installed the ROM I lost my market app. I had to flash the Google apps to my phone which I didn't like. I'm sticking to mik3d
i used to think that when i first rooted, but then i went back to cm7 and i really liked it. it does take a little bit of tweeking and such more so then sense but when everything is setup right and you find the right kernel, it can be an amzing rom. i really liked cm7 especially when i founf tiamat kernel. by far the best battery life of any rom/kernel combo. i got anywhere from 18-35 hours off charge.
Yeah i figured as much. I did download the tiamat kernel and installed it. The only problem was tweeking it and finding out what to do to make it run right. Now with the mik3d ROM, I feel it takes up too much mb and drains the battery pretty quick or is it just me.
have you tried a kernel yet? do you have setcpu? i was on golden monkey 1.1 and was getting 12-16 hours off charge. i just flashed the "aggressive freedom" .85 kernel and the battery life is not as great. gonna give it one more day to make sure then i will try the "more freedom" .85 kernel.
read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html guide.
what scaling governor are you using? do you have any profiles? how high are you overclocking?Yeah i installed setcpu and lowered it down to the suggested amount. The kernel I have on it now is the golden monkey one. I've read the sticky and I now have a better understanding of what kernels do. I just don't know why it seems my battery is draining quicker.

also you can try a different kernel. try the freedom kernels. there are four to try. i'm at the "aggressive kernel" working my way down the list.
Lol you just blew me away.. I'm guessing the governor is clockwork. Profiles I have no idea and overclocking how could I check that?

Mik3d final? I shall lean to disagree sir. The 4G bugs need fixed before you could say final. I mean we are using a 4G device here, there should not be issues while using the service to its fullest. MikG has none of these 4G issues.[/ENDRANT]
With that said. Visually and performance wise Mik3d is definately on the right track. So much so that when I flashed MikG and tried it for awhile I went back to Mik3d even with its bugs.

The mik3d is right now one of the best roms Ive tried. My 4g works and everything else works. I have a question though.. I was reading up on v6 supercharger. Should I download that and install it?
