Not able to connect vi USB mass storage

Hello everyone,

Just got my SGS2! Great phone. Very happy.

I am ex Htc user. things a bit different on the Samsung in particular I found no way to connect to PC via USB: Settings -> Wireless&Wifi -> USB Tools -> Connect USB mass storage to PC. It gives me the error "Connect USB cable". But of course. I connect the cable and cancel the kies thing by pressing home button. Then enter the menu again like above, this time with the error message "USB is connected. Remove the cable." Vicious circle !! Want to get my photos get on PC and videos and not able. What I am doing wrong?
Other thing is how to update Gingerbread I have 2.3.3 currently I know there is 2.3.4 out.

u can connect ur phone via the MTP connection thing, to connect (dont need to cancel Kies or anything) it'l show up as a device on ur phone. if u want to mount ur storage, go to settings/applications/development and check USB debugging mode, then connect ur USB.. and drag ur notification bar, and select Connect.. that should mount both internal and external SD cards..

Hi heshanj,

Thanks for quick response.
It works perfectly now. Somehow W7 wouldn't install at first need drivers I believe but now as I connected again quick install and immediately connected to my sammy on PC.
Now will try to update it and let u know how it goes. By the way what improvements brings the latter update?

battery life is the biggest improvement. used to get 12-14 hours a day, now i literally get over 24. i dont notice anything major apart from that. some test firmwares (KG2/3) had google video chat, which 2.3.4 should have, but KG5 has removed it for some reason. hope it'll be back soon.

Edit:
I believe Ilivid is Odin in a way.
So extract probably should be on PC and then connect sammy to PC and then follow steps from step
6.( Flashing Firmware with Odin)
just noticed odin link was just above my eyes:)
Am I on the right way?
 
Someone may wish to help me as I am stuck without an answer to my post. I am new to this thing and I have very little time to do research. I would appreciate if someone be patient to me and explain some things.
1. Do I only need to flash my phone to upadate?
2. Do I need to root after( rooting tut follows the after flashing)
3. When kernel file unziped I have zImage.Is that OK?
4.After that update can I update normal way or I will always have to do it that way?
...so far can't think of anything else.

Yes.

Only if you wish to. Unlike HTC handsets root isn't required to update the GS2 firmware.

Not if it's a stock kernel. That is also flashed to the handset via Odin as a TAR package, but using the PHONE slot rather than PDA.

Now it gets tricky.... ;) Yes, if the CSC on your handset is the same as the original. Odin doesn't have that restriction, allowing any GS2 firmware to be flashed regardless of locale/carrier.

Hope this helps. It's an easy process if you take it in stages e.g. update the firmware/kernel first, then root if desired.

So it is stock one. Do you mean I can still flash it on on phone stock? if not illuminate the darkness please.

Right:) Would you explain me the trick with CSC? What is it? What I presume is that after flashing CSC might change, yes?! Definitively need some guidance here.
Regarding root. I don't need it. Why would I need that on the other hand?

The screenshot shows everything's correct. Boot into download mode (VOL_UP + HOME + POWER), connect the handset to PC via the USB cable and when the "ID:COM" box turns yellow and shows a port press "Start". The firmware will flash and then the handset will reboot normally (you can disconnect the cable now, btw).

As for CSC.... who supplied the handset and was it originally branded?

Hi Slug,

fonehouse, unbranded, unlocked.
So is the kernel link I've chosen correct?(zImage unzipped file)
I was confused when was choosing the kernel there were so many of them in post 2 post 3. I really hope my battery will last longer after that. I manage only 1 day. Morning to night.

If it's the one you linked to in post #11 then you're good. You only need to unzip the zImage if you root the handset though, and wish to get rid of the pesky warning that appears on boot thereafter.

Flash the firmware with Odin (as PDA) and after the reboot I think you'll find that firmware and kernel will both be KG5.

Phone slot rather than PDA as opposed to your last post <Flash the firmware with Odin (as PDA)>?!
Right...so I have only one(as in the screenshot) file zImage after unziping it . zImage file is placed in to PDA I do this< Boot into download mode (VOL_UP + HOME + POWER), connect the handset to PC via the USB cable and when the "ID:COM" box turns yellow and shows a port press "Start">
and once more:) Will I be able to upgrade this phone via Kies if needed?

Forget about the zImage file.... it's a red herring if all you are doing is updating the firmware. It's certainly confusing the h*** out of me.

Just update the firmware by flashing the KG5 firmware TAR file (in PDA) for now. Once that's done we can worry about other things. If you have already updated to KG5 then use Odin to flash the KG5 kernel TAR file the same way (in PDA).

Do not use <PHONE> unless you are replacing the modem firmware a.k.a. the baseband. Apologies for the confusion.

Good then. Normal firmware update(kies) after? I might sell phone in the future.
