Note 2 vs iPhone 5

Don't fall into the hype of "huge phone", I was on the fence for a while, even since the note 2 came out at first on other carriers.
Correct. Please don't believe this is too large a phone.

After a few short minutes of use, you will realize the size is perfect -- the size every phone SHOULD be.

I am an Apple fan (MacBook Pro, iPad, 2 iPods, AppleTV, etc). I was eagerly anticipating the iPhone 5 assuming that would be the phone I would get. After watcing the keynote for it, I was thoroughly disappointed with it. I was expecting Apple to bring out the big guns for the iPhone 5 but, instead, we got the iPhone 4S XL.

As far as the Note 2 goes, biggest thing for me was the screen size. Only thing that came close was the LG Intuition and that was pure FAIL. I also wanted something new/different to use. iOS is in DESPERATE need of a tune up but Apple being Apple, they seem to think it's OK as is. The other specs of the Note 2, 2GB RAM, quad core, etc, was also appealing as well. I think, as of now, the Note 2 is the most advanced phone on the market. The S-Pen integration may take a little getting used to but it's quite a useful device. If you can get past the size of the device, I can't really think of anything negative to say about it. Since day 1 of ownership, I've been quite surprised at how well this phone performs. Also, having had this phone for awhile now, every other phone on the market looks like a childs toy in comparison.

For me the screen "upgrade" on the iPhone 5 was the biggest disappointment. It wasn't just that it was only to 4". It was the use of the extra size. A whole nother row of icons!? No way! Mind blown!

Many iPhone owners that had been loyal to the Apple brand for years were pissed off by the iPhone 5. There was nothing revolutionary about it. Same tired iOS. A screen only slightly bigger by being "taller" not "wider"

It's no wonder Samsung has taken a huge bite of the market share away from Apple.

Yep even my brother who is a hardcore apple fan was disappointed by the iPhone 5. He got an iPhone 5 but he only got it because the company he works for buys any new iteration of iPhone for all the major people in the company.

Then again he has never been a fan of Android. I was testing out the Droid Razr Maxx HD and I let him play with it. After 15 mins he hands it back to me and says "Meh". I have a feeling if I went and bought the Note 2 again and I let him play with it on Xmas he would do the same thing. He is a very tech savvy person (He is an IT supervisor) but I think he has owned iPhones for so long that he just prefers them. He has owned them since the 3G.

When it comes to computers he prefers Windows though.

It's so true about the iPhone 5 not being anything extra special. If you don't like change, if you want simplicity, the iPhone is the right way to go. If I'm going to spend $299 (32gb) on an iPhone, I want to have something NEW... Or I can spend $299 for a Note 2 (16gb - plus the memory card for music and photos), and have SO much more.

LOL sorry I had to leave a comment on the topic of this thread. It should read "Computer vs Pencil"!

Sorry it just struck me as funny, the Note II is so far from being comparable (IMO) to the iPhone 5 it isn't funny. I am not hate'in (well not on purpose) it's just people who want a phone with no frills buy iPhone's because everything is corporate generic sterile (like a florescent light or an operating room environment) per Apple. People who enjoy customization and variety buy products other than Apple.

LoL, sorry again not meaning to bash Apple I think they have great hardware development, but their Big Brother attitude sucks.

I am committed to no company. I buy the phone that i feel suits me best. 1.5 years ago, it was the iphone 4. Now? Note 2. If the iphone 6 appeals to me, I will probably use that. As far as computers, it has been all apple for about 5 years. And while looking at windows 8, it looks like that trend is going to continue lol.

The iphone used to be about innovation, and usually set the trend for the next year of others trying to catch up. The last 2 iphones have had neither. For the sake of competition, I hope they start innovating again. Cut throat competition is great for the consumer!

Very true Morgus,

I believe it was the Harvard Business Review that recently published an article stating that Apple is "out of business" with regards to the iPhone for at least the next 4 years. Very interesting article, I'll see if I can find it.

They have made some good moves getting rid of some people that i think were holding them back. Apple will release a great phone again, just not sure when. A better iphone, means a better android phone also!

Yeah a lot of the iPhone people are expecting the 5s to be something amazing because of how basic the iPhone 5 was. I personally think the iPhone won't create something amazing until the iPhone 6 comes out in 2 years.

I am still debating getting a Note 2 again lol. I can get it for $300 including taxes and all that at Best Buy.

YEah i think the iphone 6 might be nice, but we will see. The note 3 might be nice also lol.

As for current times, you will be very happy with the note 2.

IMO the difference between Apple Care vs Insurance is you're paying yours up front.
Also, not sure where you heard it takes forever to receive a replacement.
I and others have gotten a replacement the very next day.

The one thing Apple has over Asurion is you'll get a new phone as opposed to a refurb. About the only time Asurion issues new phones (that I'm aware) is if the phone is so new they dont have any refurbs to send.

For the most part you are right. When it comes to Asurion vs Apple Care+ it's actually a significant difference when it comes to price. Best buy is closer in price to Apple than Asurion is.

With Apple Care+ you pay your $99 up front and you are covered for 2 years. If you drop the phone and crack the screen they charge you $50 for your replacement. All replacements are brand new phones and you can get your replacement quick by going into the local Apple Store. So say you broke your iPhone screen, it will cost you $150 total (the initial $99 charge and the $50 accidental damage replacement fee) and only $50 for your next broken screen replacement. Apple Care + doesn't cover lost or stolen.

With Asurion you pay $8 a month ($192 for a full 2 years of coverage) and then you have a $150 deductible for any accidental damage like cracked screens. Sometimes you get replacements next day and sometimes it can take up to a week and no matter what you are going to get a refurb. So say you broke your Android phone's screen, it will cost you $342 total (the $192 for the coverage for 2 years and the $150 deductible) and then $150 for each replacement after that. The upside is on Asurion you are covered against lost or stolen.

With Best Buy Black Tie Protection you pay $10 a month ($240 for full 2 years coverage) or $150 if you buy the full 2 years up front and there is no deductible or fees for cracked screens. To get a replacement can take up to a week and it will be a refurbished device. So to replace your cracked screen device it will cost you $240 (or $150 if you just bought the 2 years up front). Each additional replacement won't cost you anything. Best Buy doesn't cover lost or stolen devices.

So lets just sum up the prices.......

Apple Care+

2 years coverage - $99
1st broken screen replacement - $50
2nd broken screen replacement - $50

Total - $199

I have square trade. Paid (found a coupon) $85- $100 deductible. 2 years.

I think SquareTrade is supposed to be the closest competition to AppleCare on the iPhone. I thought on the iPhone they only requires a $50 deductible. So on the Note II is $100?

I got mine at BestBuy for $49.00 Thanksgiving weekend. Tell them you were out of town and could they give you the Thanksgiving price. Worth.a try. Good luck.

If I have one complaint about my Note 2 it would be the screen resolution. I like that I can choose the color balance setting that makes the colors less saturated than what I noticed on my S3, but the resolution suffers on this large screen. My eyes got rather used to the retina display on the iphones I used, and I find the occasional graininess (is that a word) and fuzzy images to be distracting at times.
Make no mistake, this screen is HUGE and beautiful! But if you are anal about a crystal clear image and very high resolution....the lower ppi on this phone may be noticeable to you.

You are holding it too close :D:D

Iphone, you have to hold it near your nose to realize the resolution. If you are talking about the built-in browser, ditch it, install chrome and you will be happy..er.
