Note 2 vs iPhone 5

You are holding it too close :D:D

Iphone, you have to hold it near your nose to realize the resolution. If you are talking about the built-in browser, ditch it, install chrome and you will be happy..er.

Actually this Is not true. Holding the iPhone at the same distance as I would be holding the Note 2 you can see a substantial difference. This is coming from someone who has owned both at the same time and held them next to eachother. This is to be expected with IPS displays though. The text on iPhones are really clear, but a lot smaller than on the Note 2.

I was on my favorite website, TheChive, and had the Note 2 at the same time I had my iphone 5. It was night and day to me. Distance did not matter. I was torn on which appealed to me more. The sheer size of images on the Note 2 or the exceptional clarity of images on the 5. It comes down to a person's perception and preference in the end. I am not knocking this phone. Please don't take it that way. I just wanted to point out one thing I noticed that I hadn't seen mentioned thus far in the thread.

Apple made a major mistake by not making the iPhone 5 display about 1/4" wider, IMHO. The only Apple products I've ever liked are my old iPhone 4, 4S and my 5 but I'm sticking to my GN2, for now, because of the bigger display for watching Youtube and movies. For everything else I still think the iPhone 5 is a better product although not by much and the long skinny display is a deal breaker for me.

My gripes with the note 2:

Even the best 3rd party keyboard does not hold a candle to iphones keyboard, as far as typing speed

ditto for any text message client. Go Sms is good but iphone texting still far better. on note 2 when I send images they are sent sideways..

iphones email client far better than anything on the note 2. Note 2 default email client has no push email, will only check for emails every 15 minutes

no way to quicky glance at the note 2 to see how many new emails you have. I have to actually go into the email to find this out. With iphone I can open it and with one glance I know how many new emails I have ( the number of new emails is in the top right hand corner of the email client, and I've found no way to do this with the note 2)

many of the note 2 apps are difficult to use. I shouldn't have to go to a forum to figure out how to properly use the alarm clock.... Apps on the iphone just work the way you expect them to work.

I've had the note 2 for a few days but I'm prob going to go return it for an iphone. I've found I need a phone mostly for:

texting
calling
email

and for those 3 things the iphone is far easier, faster and more intuitive.

Yes the note 2 has a huge screen, but I'll take an ease of use and stability over a large screen anytime. Just my two cents.

Android isn't for everyone.

Gmail sucks. I use the native email app and it works flawlessly. Tells me how many emails I have just like iphone.

Secondly the SwiftKey keyboard far surpasses iphone.

None of the apps are difficult to use. As for Sms the native one is great.

I will never go back to apple after having this phone.

Can someone explain what's so great about iPhone's keyboard? I truly don't get it. I had an iPhone 4 and hated the keyboard. I use the stock keyboard on my Note 2 and for me it is a huge improvement. It's easier to get to numbers (top row) and symbols (long pressing) and by swiping I can type without even looking.

I suspect it's people who are new to Android and the only smartphone they've ever had was an iphone and thus believe all phones are supposed to be just like it. It's why we see so many posts that say "I need an app that does X just like the iphone" or "the iphone was better at X", not realizing there are multiple ways to do something besides the apple way. And some of those ways can be better.
Also, they haven't totally learned what their new phone is capable of.

Once they've used it for a month they change their minds. :D

What? Both mail clients on my Note 2 show a number over their icon that indicates how many unread mails I have. Does yours not do that?

You can also pull down the notification bar menu and see them all that way.

At least with these devices we get a flashing LED indicator when we have something that needs our attention. Apple still hasn't figured out that one yet.

I have the iPhone 5-the screen, while offering great image quality, is simply way too small.
I had the Note 2, and that phones screen is awesome, I had no problems with the quality of the display. Problem was Google Play selection of movies and TV is lousy.
I emailed Amazon and asked when and if they're going to introduce the Amazon
Instant Video app for Android, I got back the typical "we're looking into the matter" email.

No, I've been struggling to find some way to do this.
Tried gmail app, yahoo app as well as the default email client, none of these 3 have a # in the top right corner to quickly tell me how many new emails there are.

I'm using 4.1.2, maybe that's my problem..... ?

I was with some iphone having friends yesterday, and i whipped out the note 2...they were jealous when they started playing with it and didn't want to put it down. One of them said he was going to get the note 2 when his upgrade is up. They did say that it was a little too big, but once you get used to it, the iphone looks like a little toy next to this beast!

I have 4.1.2 on Sprint network...unrooted...my default email client shows the number of unread emails.

I was able to get this working. Now if it would only check more often than 15 every minutes....

To be fair, iOS is not that much different. At least with my two email accounts (gmail & yahoo), ONLY Yahoo email on iOS offers PUSH...with Gmail, there is no push.

For me, I rarely use PUSH, if ever. I rather let it check every hour (every 4 hours off-peak) for my main email and every 4 hours for my other email. And if I need it more often, then I do it manually. But, for me, my emails are not job related...so, I understand other people's needs. The nice thing about default email client is that it gives you how often to check for on-peak and off-peak hours. That's very useful because I do not want notification at night while sleeping!

After spending a lot of time with the note 2, I took it back and got the iphone 5. At the end of the day, I found that the only thing the note 2 had going for it was its huge screen. I use a phone for
texting
email
calling

If I need to do any major web surfing I do it on my computer, not a phone. Even with that said, I'm able to web surf on the iphone just as well as I could on the note 2, and I can do it with one hand.

In these three areas, for me, the iphone is faster to use, easier to use, far more polished, and far more intuitive. There is a learning curve with the note 2. With the iphone there is hardly any learning curve at all. The interface is so simple and logical, unlike samsung's version of android.

Without a doubt the iphone has a much smaller screen. But when you look at the resolution, there is only about 12% less screen "real estate". That means that text will indeed be quite a bit smaller, but this is not a problem for me. If you enjoy much larger text then the note 2 is probably a better choice.

This is basically like the difference between a 46 inch lcd television and a 60 inch television. Everything on the 60 is going to be much bigger, but you are essentially viewing the same amount of stuff on both sets. Sit closer to the 46 and the difference in size is negated.

Speaking of screen real estate, apps on the iphone are made to take advantage of the entire screen, I would think this is not the case for the note 2, where an app is made the same for all the android devices and all their screen resolutions. So evernote on a small android device is simply going to be larger on the note 2, viewing wise. Speaking of evernote, I found the evernote app on iphone far easier to use and more polished than on the the note 2.

I guess each person has to decide what is important to them. Each device will have its advantages according to what is most important to the user. If you don't like viewing very small resolution text on the internet browser, then the note is probably the best bet.

I found the Iphone screen, while much smaller, to be far brighter , clearer, and more vibrant and with far better colors. Outside in the sun, I found it was very tough to see the note 2 screen, unlike the iphone screen.

Oh and then there is call quality. While the note 2 has a decent enough call quality, I found the iphone 5's to be much better. ( this is the same two phones on the same carrier, in the same location talking to the same person on their carrier) Plus the iphone feels much better up against the ear than the huge note 2.

Couple other things:
I kept finding small annoyances using the note 2. For example, when I send an image over email, text message or to facebook, the note 2 reduces the image quality. I never found a resolution to this and I don't have days to spend trying to figure out why its doing this.

With iphones default email, I tap in and I can quickly see how many new emails there are for all my accounts. With note 2's default email I have to select each account and then go into that account's inbox, then manually tally up all the new emails. To me, the iphones default email just works the way I think email on a phone should work.
Now some will say, "go get this third pary email app" Well what I kept finding with 3rd party apps on the note 2 is that they are totally buggy ( go sms for one ) or they take a long time to figure out. I just don't have the time.

Ive found I'm able to do everything I was doing on the note 2 far better on the iphone 5 with a much smaller screen.

In short I like the iphone's solid, intuitive, stable and user friendly operating system ( ditto for its apps ) a lot more than the note 2's large screen.

Very well written kage65. Both phones are awesome, yet both are cr@p in their
respective ways. It all depends on the needs of the user. I know I'll sound like a broken
record, but movie and TV content is what keeps me beholden to IOS. If Android ever gets
on par with IOS offerings, I'd switch back to the much larger Note 2 in a second. Regardless of which phone, both are good in their unique ways, as well as bad in their unique ways.

Both phones are awesome, but I do think it's unfair to say that the only thing the Note 2 has over the iPhone is a larger screen. Objectively it has faster performance, removable battery, expandable memory, the S-Pen... even if you don't like the Android platform, you can't just say the only advantage of the Note 2 is a larger screen.

I am grateful to Apple for leading the way in innovation in mobile phones and tablets. In this way I think of them sort of like Starbucks. Starbucks is not my favorite coffee but it's very good and more importantly, it created a cafe culture in the U.S. that allowed some wonderful independent coffeeshops and roasters to thrive. I think of Apple the same way.

For me, I have both in my household (iP5 and Note 2). I found that Note 2 provides significantly better CELL RECEPTION than iP5...same carrier, same location, same time. THAT alone is a game changer for me since I depend on my phone's reliability in this department for work.

As for the other stuff, there are good and bad for both OS. I do agree that media-wise, Apple leads Google by a wide margin. Hell, even Samsung Media Hub has better quality movies than Google...on par with Apple iTunes! But Media Hub selection is not that good.

As for faster performance, my iPhone 5 is very fluid. It all depends on what you look at. Apple A6 is quite impressive and IMHO a better chip than Exynos 4...GPU performance is where Apple clearly leads. Therefore, I hope that Exynos 5 Octa will make up ground b/w A7 and Exynos, esp. in GPU.

I have to laugh when people say they will never go back to Apple.

If Apple released a new iPhone with some 'must have' features (including a larger screen option) and all your friends were extolling its virtues I am sure the envy factor would apply and you would be switching back.

As with all tech you have to look at what the whole market has to offer at any moment and decide what best suits your needs at the time. Saying you will never buy X or Y brand again is plainly nonsense.

I agree. People are just screwing themselves by having such a narrow view. I buy what is the best out there. Why limit yourself due to fanboyism? No one here can argue that Apple (or even Windows or BB10) does not have features that they would like. No, Android is NOT the answer to everything...neither is Apple.

Actually, if apple made a wider phone I wouldn't have left.

But i absolutely love this phone. I think this is more resilient than the iphone, has more features, and is smooth as butter. Speed wise I feel it is in line with iphone but is easier to type on.

So everyone wants different things and has different experiences. Android isn't as easy to use for sure but I love tinkering and customizing. Apple is stable and i recommend it to anyone who isn't tech savvy because you can't 'break' it lol
